Hi everyone...quick question. I am getting married in 5 days and I''m planning on bringing in my fiance''s e-ring to our jeweler to polish the platinum so it will look like new. My question is, will this process harm the center or side stones (1.6 RB center with 8 channel set diamonds on the band)? I was figuring that the polishing must use some abrasives, but how do they prevent it from harming the diamonds?

Thoughts please....

Thanks!

No worries, polishing platinum won''t harm your diamonds

Polishing won''t hurt your diamonds at all...don''t sweat it with all the things you must be thinking about in the next 5 days!!!

No problem at all, and there is no metal loss when polishing platinum (as opposed to white gold), so your ring will look as beautiful as it was the day you got it. Congratulations!

So polishing platinum does not cause it to wear down in size at all over time? I just want to confirm this bc I think a B&M salesperson mistakenly told me that a con of Platinum (over white gold which has its own cons) is that you will need to polish it every few months with regular wear and tear and the polishing will wear it down and make it thinner over time.

This is why I''ve been torn between wanting a solitaire with a simple band vs. one with an eternity band.

I''m definitely no expert, but I was told that there is no metal loss when polishing platinum. The metal is sort of moved around and back into place so there is no wearing down.

I will say that platinum gets scratched more easily than gold that has been rhodium plated IMO. I wear an eternity band next to my e-ring, and the rubbing together in that area gets a patina very quickly. The rest of the rings stays shiny for quite a while, but I don''t wear my rings 24/7 either.

The jeweler who made my rings asks that you bring your rings in every 6 months for inspection, and they polish them up like new at that time.

I think the wires of communication must have gotten crossed somehow. It is gold which will wear down over time and have a loss of weight. Platinum will scratch and whatnot more easily but the metal remains. That is why so many of the lovely antique rings you see that are in prime condition are in platinum.

Thanks guys! That relieved my worries regarding Platinum.
