Platinum or White Gold? I’m so confused. (Yellow doesn’t look as nice with my skin tone.)
Some jewelers tell me that platinum is the only way to go for white color – that white gold starts to look yellow after a while, that it breaks more easily and can damage the diamond.
Other jewelers tell me that platinum starts to look dull more quickly than white gold plated with rhodium (sp?) (I believe rhodium is in the plat family), and that platinum is softer and the ring would be more likely to change shape, and is more expensive to buy and maintain. (This was from a jeweler who custom makes both white gold and platinum jewelry.)
I have a friend who has a plat ring for about 1.5-2 years and she complains that it scratches fairly easily and seems to be changing shape a bit on the inside of her finger. It also doesn’t look that shiny to me – but very white. The rhodium plated white gold ring that I saw was so beautiful – very shiny (and who doesn’t like shiny things!).
Can anyone help me? I’m leaning towards white gold with the rhodium plating. It’s cheaper (and budget is a concern – I’d rather have it go towards a nicer stone) and seems to hold its shine better. Is the platinum worth the extra money? Or is it really just a marketing ploy?
Thanks for your help!
