Platinum or White Gold? I’m so confused. (Yellow doesn’t look as nice with my skin tone.)

Some jewelers tell me that platinum is the only way to go for white color – that white gold starts to look yellow after a while, that it breaks more easily and can damage the diamond.

Other jewelers tell me that platinum starts to look dull more quickly than white gold plated with rhodium (sp?) (I believe rhodium is in the plat family), and that platinum is softer and the ring would be more likely to change shape, and is more expensive to buy and maintain. (This was from a jeweler who custom makes both white gold and platinum jewelry.)

I have a friend who has a plat ring for about 1.5-2 years and she complains that it scratches fairly easily and seems to be changing shape a bit on the inside of her finger. It also doesn’t look that shiny to me – but very white. The rhodium plated white gold ring that I saw was so beautiful – very shiny (and who doesn’t like shiny things!).

Can anyone help me? I’m leaning towards white gold with the rhodium plating. It’s cheaper (and budget is a concern – I’d rather have it go towards a nicer stone) and seems to hold its shine better. Is the platinum worth the extra money? Or is it really just a marketing ploy?

Thanks for your help!

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here.
The question is what's right for you?
I read about the pros & cons of both (try doing a PS search typing in Platinum) & decided that, for me, white gold with a platinum head was what was best.
Good luck

I combed through a lot of posts and came up with what you've already said, plus a recommendation to find "Palladium White Gold" becuase it would stay white.

Ultimately, I went with yellow gold for these reasons:

My boyfriend loves it

I really dislike the patina on platinum (the gray look you get after a couple years)

I really dislike the grayish look my other white gold has

In a couple years, fashion will swing back around to gold and I don't want to be wearing a gray ring when it does.

Now if my ring were covered in pave diamonds I would have gone with the white or plat, because the diamonds sparkle.

But in a simple ring, well...... it was a hard choice but I went with gold.

Really my all time favorite metal is sterling silver but that is a moot point.

If budget is a concern (when is it not!) then I suggest white gold. Put every penny towards the stone. You can get a nice plain Ingwer for cheap and then you can always supgrade the setting for your anniversary or for no reason at all

I had plat and was very disappointed. It had so many dings and was very dull. I switched to white gold for two reasons- It seems to shine up better and because I was planning on upgrading in a few months...so white was the way to go for me!

People seem to have very different experiences. I personally I've had no luck with white gold rings. They turn yellow very quickly on me. I've been told that body chemistry has a lot to do with it. I'm not particularly hard on my rings and don't even wear them at home. On the other hand, I've had my platinum e-ring for over 2 years and it's as shiny as when I first got it. I also love the weight of platinum. I like my rings to feel substantial so that's the big selling point for me.
