Platinum or white gold for setting?

I''ve done some researach and am aware of the general differences btwn platinum and white gold? I''m leaning towards platinum...

What did you all go with and why?

The only "negatives" I can think of with platinum are price and it "bends more easily" so although unlikely, it''s possible the prongs holding the diamond can becomes loose over time if it gets hit, knocked around a little?

I went with white gold. Price wise, the difference was not that much. It was about $125 more for platinum. My setting is a simple 4 prong "tiffany style"setting. I opted not to go with platinum mainly because of how easily it can bend, dent and scratch. At the time, I often hand my hand around or in a computer/PC (tech support) for work.

Personally we went for 14k palladium white gold. It''s more affordable than platinum, doesn''t scratch as easily, and is more durable than ordinary 14k white gold. I love it!

There is a new thread about pave. Some PSers think pave may be more secure in WG. So what you get may depend on the setting you have in mind.

Many with alot of metal showing want WG because it looks polished longer.

My husband and I chose WG back in 1991. I preferred it to yellow. I don''t think Plat was widely available then.

I have had both in the past. I currently have platinum for my wedding set and love it. It does show scratches, which is a bummer, but I love knowing that it is more pure and will never turn yellow. It can be polished any number of times over the years. Also, it is very heavy. I love that about it. i have other jewelry in white gold which I also like, but I do love the quality of plat for my wedding set.

no, it wasn''t... I wanted plat and you couldn''t find it except in special order and it was even more of a price gap than it is now... I got married in 91 too

I have PLT. The main reason is Tacori does not make their designs in WG. Also I hate redipping WG rings and like that PLT will stay white forever. I like the patina and the weight of PLT.

I like plat and went with that for my RHR. Same reasons as Tacori; I hate having to redip it. My old RHR had the head soldered on to the shank using white gold, and that part would turn noticeable yellow after a few months. And I also like the weight of the plat. Found that after I got used to the weight of the metal, WG didn''t feel as substantial to me, but I still don''t turn down gifts of jewelry!

I''ve had my WG set for 15 years and never had it dipped. I''m just now noticing a little yellow. And the wedding ring is still very white. I''m not sure what the alloy was they used but it''s held up very very well. Yes I do wear it every day. Now I must admit that I don''t like the chrome car bumper look of just dipped WG. But Plat just polished I do like.

Cehra I forgot that we''re living parallel lives! LOL can''t believe you got married in 91 to and are going for the softer look of unplated WG.

I went with platinum because I had heard so many negative things about white gold (4 years ago). Now, it would be much harder to decide, especially the new white gold with palladium...

some of the new WG alloys are just as white as platinum... they''re just yellow white instead of grey white. I don''t think plat is "white" it always looks grey to me where white gold looks yellow. I don''t think either of them are white.

Well if we are spliting hairs here

I will rephrase. I like gray/white vs. yellow/white. If I wanted a yellowish metal I would just stick with plain old YG.
