I have been a bad PSer. I have been holding out on everyone. Long story short, FI and I took a vacation to New York.

After a long search I have found my perfect setting in NY... I so LOVE the Big City! We visited Leigh Jay Nacht and OH MY GOSH! What fabulous settings and OEC's in white, yellow, copper, brown. Many, many real antiques and replicas... a nice selection. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Keisha helped us and she has limitless patience. I looked at soooooo many different styles but I knew THIS was the one almost immediately. I met Leigh and he is so very nice as well. He started down below in the heat of the Diamond District and eventually moved up into an unadvertised building where security scans your I.D. before you can even get into an elevator.

A couple days later we visited Good Old Gold. Jonathan is even nicer in person than through email. He is a wonderful warm fellow with a huge amount of patience. He told me how he got into selling jewelry and it is an interesting story. While there my FI and I decided to upgrade my 1.24 I AVR to a 1.52 L AVR. My FI is such a great guy!!! I am so blessed! Anyway... I also looked at the AVC to be sure but the AVR still won my heart. It seems that I do not mind the warmth of the L color. Actually I think it's fabulous. Gosh how I LOVE the upgrade policy. What a WONDERFUL thing it is!

My question for all my PS friends is this... should I have this particular setting made in white gold or platinum for my nice warm diamond.

Unplated white gold. Slightly warm to match the L. =) And no worrying about rhodium plating, Otherwise, just go with plat. I hate rhodium plating things ;/

I had considered unplated white gold until I saw it in person while visiting LJN. It was a bit too dull yellow to me and didn't seem to look nice on my finger. I was a bit bummed about it too because I was expecting to like it.

Oh, yay!!!!! :appl: :appl: :appl: How very exciting!!! So envious that you were able to go find a setting AND go to GOG in person!!! And, to upgrade your stone is fabulous!!!!

The answer is platinum, hands down. White gold (plated) is just too shiny and chrome-looking for an antique style setting in my opinion. I love platinum, the color, the weight of it, and the fact that the ring will be around to hand it down for a few generations. And I like the contrast between the stone color and the metal, too.

I love the setting you chose! :appl: And I cannot wait to see your diamond set!!!

Thank you Made and Diamond. I'm thinking platinum might look perfect with that antique setting. I wish LJN would post more real life pics because their rings are soooooo much nicer IRL than on their website and they had much more to chose from in the store.

I wish they'd post more pics, too. I have looked at their site several times for settings and I do not recall seeing this one. They really need to post all the settings that they custom make!

There are so many threads on PS about the virtues of each metal, but it seems like you are looking for opinions.... so I'm going to give you my opinion!

My OEC is a Q/R and I do like the contrast between the brighter white melee in my setting vs the warmth of the OEC, and to me, the whiter 18k WG that I have, enhances the look I was going for. I was also not looking at an ering but more of a RHR and I was on a limited setting budget, so WG was my choice in the end.

If unplated WG doesn't look like you'd want the metal on your hand 24/7/365, then its certainly not the metal for you, unless they have a few different alloy options you could look at and pick one that DOES look good on you. Is it possible LJN carries a few alloys you could decide between?

Platinum will develop that nice patina that will soften and also look wonderful with the L AVR. While its more expensive initially, I think in the long run, maintenance costs are far far less than replating WG over time. Plus - this may be just me - it has the 'cache' of being platinum! All that to say, if you can afford it, get the platinum :praise:

Thanks Enerchi. I'm going to go with platinum. Diamond ... I think you hit on something. My diamond is warm. I love the OEC. I love the art deco style 20's rings and most I have seen are in platinum. I think the platinum will be the best fit for my diamond.

Next question ... should I ask for any type of particular mixture of platinum? Is there any time of mixture that is better than another?

Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with platinum - JMHO
