Hello, I was just wondering when you consider the much higher cost of platinum, whether in an antique/vintage (before 1950''s) platinum ring one can therefore assume that the diamond would be of reasonable quality/cut assuming that the ring is in its original condition. This would be for the main diamond(s), not small accent stones.

Is platinum for modern rings more a matter of personal choice, or has this always been the case and there are no hard and fast rules?

Any opinions much appreciated.
Many Thanks

Not necessarily. The original owner might have chosen platinum for all sorts of reasons--strength, weight, color, etc. Also, tastes have changed, so what was once considered high quality might not be your idea of high quality. That''s especially true of cut.

Absolutely not. In fact, most stones cut before 1950 would not qualify for what modern tastes would call a good quality cut.

Also a lot of the stones being mined and sold in the early part of the century were what would be counted as rather low color. L-M-N’s are not unusual. I wouldn’t describe a N color as being ‘low quality’ but it’s not so well aligned with current tastes and it has a significant affect on the price.

People have always faked it. Test the diamond.

Thanks all for the great feedback.
