I have a platinum cathedral setting for my engagement ring. Is it ok to purchase a white gold shared prong eternity band to wear with it? Will it look significantly different? Will one metal damage the other?
The main concern is that the diamonds in the eternity band are set low enough to not scratch the e-ring prongs. My mother wore a wg band with her platinum rings for years with no problems with either ring. But she did wear a thin platinum wedding band between the e-ring and diamond band and that kept the diamonds from scratching the e-ring. I also have a wg diamond band that I have occasionally worn with my plat. e-ring with no problems. I'd really rather have all platinum, though. The shared prong diamond band won't have much metal showing, so the slight difference in color wouldn't matter.
Yes, the platinum will eat away at the gold over time - you will likely notice this after years of consistent wear together, esp if you choose a thin gold band (with little metal). Long story short - the platinum, which is a softer metal, will allow grit (that is hard enough to scratch gold) to embed itself in the shank and the grit will scratch the gold band next to it (and since gold is lost when it is scratched off eventually the scratches will add up to enough metal loss to see) - but you are not going to do any noteworthy damage wearing two plain bands together occasionally. More explanation here and here
Big ditto DS - diamonds + metal is a much, much worse combination - the diamonds will saw away at the exposed metal on the adjacent ring. I definitely recommend a spacer that has little sentimental value - choose a gold spacer in the same alloy as you are planning your eternity, not platinum.
I'm debating a WG eternity to wear with my platinum wedding band...seems that I should consider a WG spacer (instead of platinum). Is there any reason to worry about the gold that get embedded in the platinum? Does that compromise the platinum?
