Hi everyone.

We''ve picked out our diamonds -- and they are spectacular. We walked out blinded, and had the line-up (5 stones: 0.74ct, 2x0.32ct, 2x0.1ct) emblazened in our minds ever since. And it''s a fair deal price-wise.

We sent some thoughts to the designers today, and wanted your input to see if you think we provided enough information, whether there are any additional features or issues we might address, etc. We are so tremendously excited to see what the first sketches look like.
Here is what we wrote:

Basic idea:

• 5-stone diamond ring in platinum-iridium 900 alloy.
• Size 7 ¼ (to be verified again)
• Overall classic design, organic/flowing lines.
• Prongs rounded at top, delicate, minimal coverage of diamond when viewed face-up. Overall delicate look but still sturdy and secure.
• Height above finger: Fairly low profile, most important to minimize areas to snag or large steps between stones.

Setting ideas:
• See pictures below for ideas. Rounded prongs and rounded ascent from the gallery, minimizing straight lines.
• Stone setting: Continuous taper of diamond proportions when viewed from above. Stones set close together but not overlapping. Minimize metal when viewed from above.
• Gallery: Simple with organic flow, + filigree/engraving. Would like most of design to be in gallery, not extending far onto shank.
• Diamonds cover top of finger but do not extend below finger level.

Shank ideas:
• Wider band (i.e., 3-4 mm ?? Will verify), comfort-fit rounded edges.
• European style.
• Want it to be able to sit flush with wedding band.

Note: The designer should have creative license with our ideas. They are the experts, and we want it to be design-wise and structural-wise both lovely and safe/durable. And most importantly, have fun!

sounds beautiful, can't wait to see your pictures. Once you have your first rendering, that's when you can for sure see what was missed or totally off.

Mark Morell made a beautiful ring...its got 2 more additional stones in it but if may give you some ideas.

I dont know if I can bring a picture over but if I cant here is the link. It is about 3/4 way down on the page
and says "Thank you, Nathan" near it.

EDIT -ok so the picture didnt drag over and I forgot the link...here it is:

Here is the CAD design done for my five stone by Wink Jones. It sounds like it has many of the features you are looking for. It can be done in platinum, and Wink is amazing to work with!! A nicer gentleman does not exist on this planet!!

Here''s the finished piece.

What a beautiful ring! We love how the prongs are incorporated and arise so organically out of the gallery. It''s stunning. This definitely gives us some ideas.

We''re working with Jewelsmith in Durham NC and having a blast doing so.

By the way, just to clarify why we posted this...
We just want to be sure that we get this right the first time. We''re very confident it''ll be fine, as we get to see sketches before any work is done, and then a wax before they do the actual metal-work. Nevertheless, hoping to get to our ideal goal quickly and hoping we were able to convey our wishes well enough.

If anyone has any advice, we''d love to hear it. We''re so impressed with the kindness and insight everyone shares here.

We actually did some more ring shopping today, just to try things on, and we''re feeling a good deal more anxious now. It''s so hard to tell how a ring looks until it''s on your finger, and we''re nervous about doing a custom-designed plan without being able to picture on my FF''s hand.

On my end, I''m nervous about how long things may take. We know the general timeline for a custom ring with Jewelsmith, but I don''t want us stuck in planning and re-designing for a month. We both want to go ahead and have our joyous day.

Any reassurances? Or ways to be sure that we''re getting exactly our vision across the right way?

will you be able to try the wax on? One of the challenges that I have had with custom rings is not being able to try on the wax to see how it fit and how comfortable it was for me. I have since decided on important pieces that I must at least try on a mold and see the design to make sure its what I wanted (in rings). Is this drawn on a CAD? if so, you can tweak design elements fairly easy and hopefully it won't take you a month to move forward in casting this ring.

Thanks D&T. Great advice, I''ll be sure to ask tomorrow about trying on the wax when I go over to talk more logistics. We do know we get a wax, and they use CAD. Hopefully this will help the whole design process go smoothly.

Thanks again for the tip, and we''re trying to stay encouraged and optimistic (and not too inpatient!)
