So my weekend is starting out FABULOUSLY!! (note sarcasm here) Piju, my dog, got into it with a skunk and maimed it but not before getting hit head-on. The skunk is still alive, but I believe it''s now a parapalegic. So we called Animal Control, and someone''s supposed to be coming out to take care of it but that was a half an hour ago. We don''t want to bring Piju into the house, we''d rather wash him out back, but we can''t wash him because the skunk hasn''t been taken care of. grrrr I''m so frustrated.

Anyone know of any good home remedies or products on the market that will take skunk off of dogs? Tomato juice just isn''t gonna cut it this time...

We were house-sitting for FI''s parents and one of their dogs got sprayed. We called FI''s sis who is a vet and she said to use peroxide, doggie shampoo, and baking soda I believe. It worked!

Do a google search, or call your vet. I had always heard of using tomato juice, but maybe that''s outdated?? Good luck!!
I also read you had a job interview, sending your buckets of fairy dust!!! Hope you get the job!!

Please let us know what you end up using, we have skunks here too. But luckily my dogs haven''t been sprayed yet!!

According to Mythbusters:

Removing skunk odor with...:
* Tomato juice: plausible
* Beer (MGD): busted
* Douche: busted
* Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + liquid dish soap: confirmed
* Commercial skunk remover: confirmed (not as good as custom mix above)

silly question, but if I use peroxide on my black dog, will it turn him into a blonde? I actually think he''d like it but....

I think you''d have to leave the peroxide on for a little while so it shouldn''t make a difference if you just bathe him in it kinda quickly. Not sure though...

This is probably too late, but the first thing you are supposed to do is wipe off your dog thoroughly with paper towel to soak up as much skunk as possible before you use any other remedies. It made total sense to me when I heard this, but I heard it too late as well. Next time I''ll know better.

Good luck!

Our Great Dane got sprayed a couple of times when I was growing up. It was nasty to say the least. No, tomato juice does NOT work. Dont waste your time. We always took him to the vet and let them deal with him...If you do it, you''ll end up stinking too...

I know how you feel though. Once, I think it was my first Xmas Eve with Mr. Surfgirl, I was finishing wrapping his presents at my apt. - an old bungalow place with crawl spaces underneath the buildings - when I heard this hellatious screaching underneath my floorboards. Then it stopped and this horrid STENCH came wafting up through my carpeting. Apparently some cats had a run in with a skunk underneath the apt and the skunk sprayed. It was awful. I grabbed all the presents and ran to my car before I got too stinky...but yeah, it''s not fun. Sorry HH...

Well we tackled him this morning for a bath in the back yard. We left him outside last night because there was no way we were going to do it last night at 11 pm. So last night it started raining

We felt really bad leaving him out, but it was a warm night and it actually helped a bit. We started with the peroxide baking soda dish soap mixture and rinsed. Then we followed that with skunk remover and rinsed. Then we used ferrett shampoo. Yes, you heard correctly, ferret shampoo. Apparently ferrets exude a similar musk to skunks, and this stiuff is designed to get rid of ferrett stink. So we thought we''d give it a shot. Now we''re waiting for him to dry, but at least he''s clean enough to be inside. Hopefully this will all work.

2 days later and no stink is coming from the dog. YAY!!!

So glad it worked, woohoo!!
