Once you have your diamond and you pick out a setting at a local B&M, do they charge you a fee to set it usually or set it for free since you bought the setting there? Also better to buy the store insurance for the ring or putting under your home owners?

I think most stores are still going to charge you to set a diamond that you did not buy from them, even if you did buy the setting from them. I remember WF was going to charge about $125 to set my diamond into a custom setting I was thinking of having made. The other concern is who is going to bare the risk of damage to the stone during the setting process...you or them?? That is something that you should work out BEFORE any work is agreed to and performed, that why there are no surprises if the worst happens.

As for insurance, use the search feature here on PS, there are tons of threads with everyone''s various opinions, including professionals.

I did the opposite. I bought the setting from one vendor without a center stone and then had the jeweler from which I bought the stone set it. I felt more comfortable doing it this way as less chance of any "switching" to occur (especially since THEY sold me the stone and had given me the GIA cert upon purchase) and more care not to have it damaged (just my view anyway). The jeweler did not charge me extra for the setting of the stone, only to resize the setting, which I had no problem paying....
