I need help. For some reason, I can't upload my photos any more. I am overdue in showing you two new spessartites. I ended up sending them back, but I took photos to share. But when I try and upload them, it seems like PS doesn't respond and the action just freezes.

I have kept all my notes from my last few lessons from you all. I have the Nikon Coolpix. I import the photos as jpeg files, I make sure they are not longer than 6 on their widest side. I open a new topic, go to the upload attachment, choose the file, and click on add file, but then it freezes - the url changes, but freezes...

Help me. I have pictures for you all and can't share them.

Thanks.

I dont know, it sound right to me.
I size mine to 5 inches on the short side and 180 dpi. seems to work fine
"upload attachment"
"browse"
"add the file"
place inline

Assuming the problem is the pic being too large (which may not be the problem) . . .

Size can mean two separate, but related, things:
1. How many inches, mm, or pixels it takes up on the monitor.
2. How large the file is in bytes or megabytes, which abbreviated MB.

Using measure #2, PS can accept files up to 2 MB. (which is the same as 2,000 KB or Kilobytes.)

To find out how many MB your file is do not open it but just right click on the file's name (or its icon) on your computer.
If it is larger than 2 MB open it and save it as a smaller file and name it something new.
Your computer may use other terms like dpi or low/med/high/resolution.

I wish the industry would standardize all this.

When sizing any image for a website, you should make it 72 dpi.

Perhaps that works on your computer and software.

I can't set dpi.
I have a Mac and use iPhoto.
When exporting pics setting dpi is not possible.

What I do to get maximum clarity on PS is save it once and then check the file size of the file I just saved (how much memory it takes up).
If it is not almost 2.0 MB I'll go back and save it again at a higher resolution.

72 dpi is fine if you dont want the picture to be useably zoomable. I like to see detail and typically will zoom in on webpages and photos in posts. I upload them at 180 dpi so that people can make the picture bigger than it first loads as.

Any website will only display at 72 dpi. If you are using something at any other resolution, then the browser is making a conversion. Maybe that's why I hear people comment that Pricescope changes their images. When ever I upload something to Pricescope it's always at 72 dpi, and the images always look exactly like my original.

Kenny, I too use a Mac. I don't use iPhoto much, as I do everything in Aperture, but you can adjust the size and resolution (dpi) by using Preview. Preview is a really powerful photo editing tool, and very easy to crop and change resolution with.

I too have a Mac, and am used to the terminology used by Kenny. The dpi thing I'm not familiar with, but will go check out Preview to see what I can do there. Thanks for the help.

VL, this is really because I wanted you to know why I decided not to keep the spess I got (with your incredibly kind assistance) from Litnon. It has a window (you know how I feel about windows), and the way it was cut, the edge in most lighting, shows as having black. I don't even know the terminology for it any more (confusion setting in) but I guess its extinction due to cutting? Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful orange color (I took a pic from the pavillion so you can see what I mean about the color). I am ever so grateful for your help and thoughtfulness and so sorry :blackeye:

open your file with Preview, go to "Tools" pull down to "adjust size" . pixels per inch is same as dpi.

Im sorry to hear the spess was not right for you. I feel much the same about windows as you. Just from the pictures it looked like is might fit your color criteria of reddish orange. The right one will come along in good time.

I found a beautiful, cleftless heart or fat pear from Gem Earth, which I also took pics of. It is a pure orange with little extinction, but it went back too. Its a good candidate if someone is looking for a lighter, pure orange.

I'll try to post pics now.

Okay, I go to Preview and get into Tools, adjust size.

The first thing is: "Fit Into" What do I say? Right now, it says 1920 x 1080 pixels

The next thing is: "Width" and "Height" I have a choice between pixels, inches, percent, cm, etc. Please tell me the maximum numbers that should go in.

Finally, it says "Resolution" I have 72 pixels/inch in.

Please help - tell me what else I need to do and what I should put in for "Fit into," "Width" and "Height" I don't understand what I did which is different than what I have done before...

TIA

leave fit into as "custom"

height and width should be locked together in the proportions of your image, chose whichever is the longest side and make it 5 inches.

then your 72 resolution.

all this may not really be different than what you were doing before. Have you had a browser change or update recently? are there any special characters or punctuation marks in the file names that arent allowed? That last one can really mess things up.

Finally, I think I have the photos working. Unfortunately, the photos make the stones look darker. I took them from the pavillion view so the color is more visible. In reality, the Litnon stone is a nice saturated orange with a slight reddish tint, but it went back because I couldn't get over the window. The Gem Earth stone is a lovely stone, with great light return, but it went back because it is light, a pure orange like a tangerine.

VL, thanks for getting my photos to work.
