What are you doing with your pets? We are traveling over 13 hours and have no family or friends here to take care of the 2 little boogers :) So I found this awesome place online that has suites for cats where they can have chairs and things to play on and not just be in a cage. It''s basically a hotel that was converted to a cat resort haha. It charges only about 15 bucks more than the vet wants to just stick them in a cage...am I being overly worried here about just leaving them at the vet? Lol I''d have to drive 40 minutes to the place too but I really think it would be worth it. It''s 200 bucks for my 2 cats (pay 100 up front and 100 when you pick them up) for a room like this one :)

I'm not sure what we are going to do with our pets during the wedding/honeymoon. My FMIL has offered to stay at the house and watch them but I'm not crazy about having her at the house for a week because she always finds so many projects to undertake there! I think we will end up boarding the dog and asking a friend to look in on the cats daily.

That said, I don't think I would splurge for this cat hotel, especially if money is tight (since you will also have to factor in the gas to travel there). Yes, boarding your cats at the vet is not ideal, but I personally don't think it will affect them that much. My pets have spent a week boarded at the vet before (when we were having our floors refinished) and they all survived just fine.

Wow, that sounds like a great deal to me! I would totally do it, but I'm a sucker for our kitty. We had to leave him with my parents this past weekend (we are going on vacation tomorrow! Woo hoo!) and I feel guilty about even doing that! It's silly, because I know he's in great hands - he lnows my parents, he's been there before and I'm sure they will spoil him. Yet, I feel so bad because I know he's all confused and missing us.

He's still a baby (4.5 months) and the first pet that has been my sole responsibility - that may be why I'm such a neurotic owner! So personally... I don't think I could board him at the vet unless I had to. It's just a personal thing though.

Our wedding is local, so it's not as much of an issue for us aside from the fact that we will be spending the wedding night in a hotel. I am going to ask someone close to us to stop by at some point on the wedding day to feed him and check in on him, most likely. He's never been left alone overnight before so I will feel really bad, but I don't know if that can be avoided. And it's just one night, at least.

My only concern about the vet is that they will not have the room to run around? Has anyone else ever boarded their cats in a cat condo? How were the cats when you picked them up? I know our vet is fantastic so I have no doubt that she''ll pay attention to them, just don''t want them stuck and cramped up for a week, ya know?

That place looks awesome! My dog will be most likely staying in something very very similar unless my mom suddenly falls in love with him and wants to watch him. I would love for this to happen so he could be in my getting ready pictures.

I think that's awesome! And the price doesn't seem like that much ... how long is it for?

You could also look into pet sitters that come to your house. I have one that charges $35 a day and her rate is pretty flat even with more animals (though I'm sure she would up the charge if you had a lot of dogs to walk or something). So it might be cheaper to find a pet sitter than take them to the hotel. Then again, some people have a hard time letting a stranger into their home while they're gone, which I totally respect.

ETA: We had friends watch our bunny while we went on the honeymoon. They don't have any pets (unless you count chickens) so they really enjoyed having him around to play with. It worked out so well they're going to watch him again when we go on vacation next week. I do love our pet sitter, but for more than a long weekend she's a lot more expensive than having a friend watch the bun.

Smurf- I'd go for the cat condo. In a heartbeat! We're paying out the ears for a home-boarding place for our pup. Two weeks is TOO LONG for any animal to be cooped up in a cage! ETA: Not sure how long you're OOT for, but in our case, it's two weeks.

Alternately- and this *totally* depends on how you feel about this.... But if you wanted to leave them at your place, I'd be more than willing to check up on them *if* you're willing to do the same for me when I'm gone for my wedding/honeymoon. Tit for tat? I know you said that you're in Englewood. I live in the DTC. I'd do a free daily check-in, feed, water, pet, clean the box if you could return the favor? We're in the same boat, trying to find someone to watch our kitties, but they always do best in their home environments. It's a lot less stressful for them. And cheaper!

Maybe we can find a way to link up on FB?

Oh wow pilsn! that is so generous and I would do it in a heartbeat but I''ll have to talk to fi about it because he''s paranoid about people being in our apt :) Maybe if we could meet up and he could see you''re not some loony who''ll steal our tv he''d be ok with it haha :) I added you on fb just a minute ago :)

Petsmart has a pet hotel. Cost us about $80 for 3 cats to stay a week (apartment inspection). They aren''t in a big room, but it isn''t a small cage. So they''ve got room to move & play in the cage. Plus they have someone who takes them out for individual play time several times during the day.

I was more comfortable with this than leaving them with our vet because this place has someone physically there around the clock. The vet doesn''t.

They have the "bone booth" where your animal can sit while you talk to them on the phone. Cats & dogs are in different locations. The dogs get an indoor park to walk in and play time to run around.

We were even able to bring our own food for them and specify the feeding schedule. They also let us bring cat beds/blankets/toys if we wanted. (they provide a bed & toys in addition to the basic cat box and food & water bowls)

The place was clean. People were friendly. The cats were happy to see us when we picked them up but certainly weren''t upset to be there. (they spoiled them almost as much as we do)

Oh -- and while the animals are there, you can have them taken across the store for grooming if you want.

we''re doing the same for our dog day of the wedding, and my parents (his grandpuprents) will take care of him there after. he''s used to it though :)

That cat condo looks really nice! Have you visited the place to check them out and ask a lot of questions to make sure that they give quality care to the animals?

That price sounds really good to me. We''ve boarded our kitties at PetSmart, at the vet, and at a posh expensive place that looks a bit like the photo you showed. We had great experiences at all of the places.

The only reason we left them at the vet was because they were elderly and we had been injecting saline in one kitty and administering ear meds in the other, so they were high maintenance and I didn''t trust anyone other than the vet.

If it were me, I''d board them in the condo (if I couldn''t find anyone to come to the house) as long as I was comfortable with the place and the people who work there.

My BIL and SIL came to the house every day to feed our kitties, give them lots of love, and clean the litter box while we were away for our honeymoon.

These guys are family to me. We have someone who comes to the house. I have boarded a dog at the vet and he was a nervous wreck when we brought him home. I''d do the condo or take pilsn''s offer.

We are getting a friend to babysit our doggies.

But we were looking into a company in Australia that provides free pet/house sitting in return for free board and accommodation. You can interview the people before you make a decision.

When it comes down to it, I am not worried in the least about my home, my one priority is making sure my furbabies are happy and secure in their own homes. It''s bad enough having Mum and Dad take off for four weeks, the least we can do for them is leave them in their own environment.

I have to say my sister is a vet nurse and from what she''s said I wouldn''t bord my pets at the vet, it sounds really misserable and lonely for them. Mostly they are just kept in a small cage and let out to "play" once a day for a short period of time....and when you let a bunch of different cats out of their cages to "play" most likely not alot of "playing" is going on.

I''ve hurd horrible things about dog kennels too.

When we go away for more then a day we as a neighbour to pop in a couple of times a day and feed the animals and give them a lil bit of love. We I was a teenager I house sat for a family (friends of my parents) with a dog while they were away to keep the dog company and maintain his regular routine and got paid $10 a day.

There are also companies which you can pay to come by and feed the pets, collect the mail and water plants etc while you''re away.

go for the luxury kitty room! i know that i am! i think the hardest thing about getting married is the idea of leaving coco for 2 weeks! i am dreading it!

Wow that looks pretty nice! I have no idea what I am doing with my 2 pups for my wedding. All of my trusted family and friends will be travelling for the wedding and so there is nobody to puppysit. Our pups are more like babies to us so it is out of the question to put them in a kennel. I am still not sure if we are bringing them with or searching for some loving soul to care for them for a week. That seems to be our biggest stress at the moment.

I''m really crossing my fingers that pilsnpinkys fi likes the idea :)

We put our dog in Wag Hotel, a fancy kennel and doggie day care center in SF when we got married. Yea, we paid more than the average place, but he got two walks, play time, and a peanut butter kong or some other daily treat. For the larger rooms, they also have a camera, so you can log on and see your dog on dog cam. Considering our concerns with people mishandling our dog, we were happy to see our dog enjoyed his stay and that the Wag Hotel would be happy to have him back. DH''s parents watched the dog on our honeymoon - he gained over a pound in 2 weeks. And considering he should only be 14 lbs...let''s just say the vet noticed he''d gotten "plump." MIL denies it, and claims he was even skinnier. FIL just rolled his eyes and told DH on the phone, "Your dog looks fatter." Aiyaaa...

If you can afford to have the cats play, why not? I mean, this is something you''re going to do all the time.

We have two cats and when we got married a little over a year ago, we boarded them at a kennel. Our wedding was about a 2 hour drive away, and we were leaving for our honeymoon immediately afterwards. We hated boarding the kitties, but we'd done it before and we all survived. Ha! We asked that they be kept together in the same condo (a large, 2 story cage, really) so they could keep each other company. The staff said that the kitties were well behaved, although skittish. When we picked them up after our honeymoon, one of our cats hissed and wouldn't come out. Apparently, he didn't like that we were going to interrupt his "new" routine yet again. It took a while to get him out but once we got him home and he could ease into normalcy again, it was fine. The kennel we used is a very good one, and I really like the care they give the animals, but I've always felt uneasy about bringing them somewhere away from the comfort of home.

We have since moved to another part of the country, and we've used a pet sitting service when we've gone away. I MUCH prefer that! The cats' routine doesn't change, plus we have someone checking on the house and picking up the mail while we're away. It's a little more expensive to use a service, but we gladly pay the extra.

Sorry for such a long response Smurfy!

ETA: I just read Pilsnpinky's post, and I hope the two of you can work something out. If not, I'd still vote for a pet sitter to drop by. I guess it all depends on how your kitties do with change.

We have a Wag Hotel in the Sacramento Area too. My mom uses them all of the time for her cat. This is who we will use for our dogs.

meeting up with pilsnpinky this weekend to make sure the other one is a not a nut job, although im pretty sure she''s not haha :)

Hi Honey22. Good luck with your wedding. I always smile when i see the date cos the orginal one was my DD 18th b'day and the 26 Nov is my DS 21st!
Anyhoo we are going OS for about 5 months next year and have an old dog. We usually get someone in the house (a group of elderly ladies that hop from house to house) but none are available.
Can you give me the name of the company. I am inQLD but maybe they know someone up here.
Thanks

Yimmers, this is the best idea I have heard!!! To be able to see your pets are ok with your own eyes is fabulous!!

$200 is cheap to what I've looked at.. and they don't look as nice as that!

I would go for it... they're worth it
