I took Comet to the vet Friday for a check up and booster shots. I had noticed the his ears had small scabs on them and were tender to the touch. The vet informed me that his ears were sunburned and that, as with humans, it can cause skin cancer over a prolonged period. He suggested that I use sunscreen on his ears...that white or light colored pets are more easily burned. So now, Comet gets sunscreen on his ears every morning.

You are such a good mommie.

I didn''t even think that pets could get sun burned, thanks for the tip!! I will protect my pets now!!! I think my parent''s dog''s nose gets burned sometimes.

My horse always needs sunscreen put on his nose-otherwise it burns to a crisp! He hates it being put on!

Absolutely - white and light-colored cats and dogs (and horses too - good to know Bee!) can get sunburned and can get skin cancer. My mom''s rescue doggie from the SPCA where I volunteer was a terminal rescue from there because she had skin cancer and they can''t be sure if it will recur/spread. I know that skin cancer is usually very serious and often deadly in cats too, so for sure something to watch for in kitties. Good for you Oshin for putting sunscreen on your kitty''s ears!!

I never thought about it either, which was why I posted this. We need to protect our pets from the sun too.

I was actually reading about this the other day - how light colored/furred pets can get sunburn. Good for you for being observant and taking care of it!!!

Oh, I had no idea. Well, I learn quite a bit here everyday about things other than diamonds.

Yes, this is a good precaution to take for light or white coloured ears. I have to watch out for horse noses etc as pale areas can burn on them too.

Or better yet, keep the beautiful beast indoors

Comet won''t stay inside. He has 5 acres to roam around and "protect". He loves to chase all the critters that are on the land, and lay out in the sun after patrolling the area.

I, madam, stand corrected!!!! Honestly, I might do the same thing if I lived like that...siggghhhhh!!!.....That would be fabulous for my little monsters....Break out the WaterBabies and send him out on patrol!!!

And BTW, I'd love to see a snap shot of you putting sunblock on him LOL

I have to put block on my paint horse as he has a white nose to stop it burning

OMG...like I didn''t have enough to worry about. TG my pale kitty is the indoor kind. Do you think sun can get through my german shepherd''s fur? Her ears & face are black & tan. Plus she''s indoors until she has to go potty or something. Usually sleeping on the sofa or my bed if I forgot to shut my door. Stinker.

I have to apply sunblock to my horse''s nose, too. Chance has a light colored nose, and he has a few spots on it where he burned really badly and scarred before I bought him. Poor fella... I use the Coppertone kids sunblock that goes on in bright colors, so his nose is purple or blue or whatever when he goes out for the day.

I felt so bad after the vet told me his ears were burned.

It never even dawned on me that he could sunburn. I''m glad to hear quite a few of you take the precaution with your precious pets. What kind of sunscreen do you use? I use coppertone sport spf 50 for myself when I''m in the pool, on the boat, or mowing (which I have to do today). I wonder if indoor pets can get sunburned if they lay in front of the window alot? Wiggy (chihuahua) loves laying the the rays inside. Should I put sunscreen on her too? I''ve noticed that they have pet sunscreen at some of the pet stores.
