making an emergency trip there.
been before but its been awhile.
hoping for some personal free time but might not get it.
but if i do have some, i''d welcome any suggestions as to where to go to see some great jewelry and/or get some great eats.
will be staying in freemantle, across the street from the hospital.
willl have access to a car while there and i''ve driven there before so that''s not an issue.
however, i''d want to maximize what little time i might have and i don''t have much time to do research right now.
thanks for any ideas.

mz

big time difference between here and there but i did hope there were some perth aussie pricescopers. oh, well.

Hi Movie Zombie. I know there are a couple of Perth-based people on P.S who can probably be of more help, but having lived in Perth 5 years ago and having visited regularly since, perhaps I can offer some suggestions.

Fremantle has heaps of great places to eat and drink, but unfortunately I can''t think of any off of the top of my head at the moment, but I would recommend a trip back up the coast towards Perth to check out Cottesloe, if only to check out the beach.

As far as places to check out bling, the only place that really springs to mind is Subiaco. If I recall correctly Rokeby Road has some nice jewellery shops, but honestly I don''t know that you are going to be blown away by what is on offer as far as bling is concerned. Oh, and a trip to Kings Park is a must if you get the time. If only for the view.

thanks, softly. my husband is from perth so i''ve seen the park and been up the coast as well as down the coast as far as albany and inland to winetaste around the mt barker region. this trip is an emergency trip so any time i have will be "stolen" time....but i''d like to make it count. worst case scenario i just go sit at a beach or the brewery. the leuwin II is in town over the weekend but i''m guessing any stolen time i get will be later next week. again, thanks for responding!

Hi MZ!

I am on the train on the way to work right now, so I will give you a proper reply later, just wanted to say yes, there are a few of us from Perth, AJ and justginger spring to mind.

Since you are staying in freo I have to suggest little creatures... Awesome brewery and even if you don''t like beer the atmosphere and food are worth it alone!

As I said, will write more later.. I just wanted to bump it for the other ladies to see.

I was going to suggest Little Creatures but I wasn''t sure if you were interested in beer. Sounds like you probably know Perth as well as I do/did. Enjoy your trip!

Hi
I work in Fremantle! For meals Id try Harvest in North Fremantle, or there are a few cafe/bistro places in George St in East Fremantle. For fancier food I like Jacksons and Must wine bar, but both of these are in North Perth/Highgate. Jo Jos on the river in Crawley near the University Of WA is in boat house type thing on the river, open lunch and dinner, lo vely view and reasonable priced Italian food.
For bling, well really there are Pearls (South Sea from Broome), try Linneys in Rockeby Road Subiasco, or in King St Perth there is Kailis and Linneys, I think from memory there is a Kailis in Frenatle too, down near the Esplanade hotel.
Good luck.

My previous response got eaten, so apologies for the bluntness (running out of time to start work).

Food - Little Creatures, Rocco''s or Bella Roma for Italian, the Left Bank or Salt on the Beach (used to be the Oyster Bar) for poshish nice lunch.

Jewellery - City (Solid Gold, Koro), Freo (Kailis), or Subi (Thomas Meihoffer, Smales). Jogia has an office, but I''m not sure where - maybe St George''s Tce? Also some nice antique stuff in London Court and a lovely vintage store in Cottesloe called House of Riches.

Hope you have a great time here - lovely weather for you.

Hi Movie Zombie

I hope it’s not a bad/sad reason that is causing you to make this emergency trip, but as you’re staying across the street from the hospital, I’m guessing things are not well with one of your hubby’s relatives. If that’s the case then I hope they recover soon and am sending lots of healing dust for you all.

You sound like you know Perth/Freo quite well, so I’m going to mention some specific events and try to keep it to mainly evening things as I’m guessing your days will be quite full

However, if you manage to get a whole day free and like nature/outdoor type stuff, you could always go swimming with the dolphins down near Rockingham (really therapeutic) plus Rottnest Island is always good fun. Also AQWA at Hillary’s Boat harbour is really interesting, and of course Kings Park in the centre of Perth, which you already know about. Shakespeare in the Park is on at the moment- it’s the Taming of the Shrew this year (very funny)– performances start at 8pm, and tonight the Ten Tenors are on at the Quarry Amphitheatre (they’re there until the 31st I think) Next week BSSTC are performing The Sapphires at the Playhouse Theatre (Pier St in Perth)

LOL – I was going to mention the Leeuwin and suggest maybe the twilight sail, but you’re way ahead of me there.

The twilight prison Tour at Freo Gaol is quite good fun if you like history tours (I think it starts about 7.30 and lasts for 2 hours) or if art is more your thing then the Fremantle Arts Centre is quite good. Not sure what your taste is but they have a couple of different exhibitions on at the moment

food-wise, Sala Thai on Norfolk Street in Fremantle does the best Thai food in Perth and is very authentic. Also Cicerello's down at Fishing Boat Harbour does great fish and chips and The View, also at Fishing Boat Harbour, is quite good too, with (surprise, surprise) good views out over the Indian Ocean. And the Red Herring on Riverside Drive in East Freo is nice for Sunday lunch and an afternoon glass of wine.

Jewellery-wise Fremantle Opals on Market St, not far from the train station, might be worth a look The folks there are friendly and happy to talk but you might find the prices a bit expensive (especially with the current exchange rates) also Kallis on Marine Terrace is the place to go if you like Pearls. For cheap and cheerful costume jewellery/gemstone jewellery, Mystic Vision in Piccadilly Arcade, Perth is not too bad, (Small shop, but reasonable range for its size) and esola in Cottesloe has some fun Costume/gemmy type jewellery. For more upmarket jewellery, we don’t really have WOW type shops in Perth, but Koro in Carillion City and Linneys or Ecali on Rokeby Road in Subi are quite nice and nearly always have something a little bit different from the “bog standard” engagement type rings

Actually I’ve just remember, the Katherine Kalaf Gallery in Cottesloe (I think its Railway Street) might be better to go to for a slightly different jewellery experience and she often has different jewellery exhibitions on with various local/national designers featured. Oh and the Perth Mint for Gold.

Goodness this is a long reply. Hopefully something on my list might appeal, and I hope it’s not all sad/bad while you’re here.

Mac

ETA: if you do go to Rotto, the Indigenous Tour is meant to be really good. Not done it myself but heard really good things about it. You can pre-book through this site http://www.indigenouswa.com/rottnest.htm

Mac, thank you so much! this i what i need. i''m printing out your suggestions to take with me. i assume you live in the area?

unfortunately, your guess is right.......but for now the sitation is improvig and hopefully will stay that way for a while.

mz

miss and justginger,

yes, hubbie has already said we must return to Little Creatures!

i''m also printing out your suggestions to have with me. if i have any time to myself, i''ll be using them!

unfortunately, i''m not a hot weather person....and find perth/freo to be on the humid side for me also, the mosquitos bit the heck out of my ankles which then swell horribly.......and the last time i was there my allergies kicked up really bad...that was a three week trip though so i hope the short exposure of 1 week won''t give me the problems with the sinuses. sigh.

Hi MZ,

You've received lots of great replies and info so far.

I am a Perth-ite and will keep an eye on this thread, please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

Most of the jewellery stores are concentrated in Perth City CBD, but I would actually suggest Subiaco for more boutique/original designer stores - it is on the same train line as Freo or about a 20-25min drive.

I would be happy to meet you one day and walk around if you like :-)

aj

You''re welcome MZ. I actually live up in the Perth Hills, about a 45 min drive from Freo, but go to Freo and/or Cottesloe quite often at weekends, plus every time my MIL comes to visit we go exploring as we both love anything jewellery related. My MIL is great for sniffing out ''back street gems''.

I expect you will have full support network with hubby''s family but if you need anything at all while you''re here, please feel free to get my details from PS admin and then give me a shout.

JG, the jogia office is on Barrack Street, but they''re really unfriendly. When I went to see them, I couldnt wait to get out. The older chap is rude and patronising and makes out like he''s doing you a favour even considering selling one of his diamonds to you (and of course his diamonds are absolutely better than any other diamonds in the world

thanks, ladies! i''ll see how it plays out.....

Sounds great MZ - and I am glad to hear things are looking better for FIL health-wise.

Haven''t received note from admin yet - I have a funny feeling they don''t do that sort of thing? But I could be wrong.
If it turns out they don''t, you''re welcome to get my info from one of the vendors (BGD, WF - just let me know and I''ll email them to give permission).

My e-ring is currently with BG, so if we do meet I will wear my avatar sapphire ring
