Remember anyone can read these threads.

A good rule is that if you wouldnt tell someone about it at a bus stop across the street from your house dont share it on the net.

Lets be a little more careful.
I dont want to hear about anything happening to my friends here.

Like what? Honestly, I don''t know if I have given out information I shouldn''t have.

The threads with finacial info are over the top.
Doing some searches here it would be pretty easy to put together a profile on someone.
Then use that information to get addresses.
I dont want to scare anyone but play it smart and if you wouldnt tell someone about it at a bus stop across the street from your house dont share it on the net.

i agree with being careful about personal info and money, but in discussion of a ROTH IRA...it''s not like that means you''ve got that money laying around or anything, so confused as to how that can be detrimental? it''s not like it''s a discussion of ''do you have a safe in your house and if so describe it to me''.

anyway in our case, if someone decided to come see what we got, we ain''t got much, they could take our new EC.

ha- when I was growing up no one in our neighborhood locked their doors. We used to joke that if a robber came into our house he would actually leave something!

Any one thread isnt likely enough info but the information starts to add up after a while.
Im not trying to scare anyone just saying keep it in mind.

A friend of mine was in coma for 3 days becuase someone wanted a drug fix enough to hit him over the head with a hammer for the $23 in his wallet there are some real scary folks out there.

Do you really think people like that are stalking/haunting PS? I would think they''d be on a different forum - if one at all.

I have to say I agree with Storm on this one...

I don''t think there are people out there stalking PSers...but it wouldn''t necessarily be a bad place to try to "stalk" someone...

For the most part, folks here are affluent enough to own some very nice jewelery...any by reading the boards, you could likely figure out what town a member lives in, what they do for a living, how much they make per year, how large their home is, and other information including their name and perhaps even more info than that...from that, it might be possible to actually find out who they are and where they live.

It probably isn''t happening, but I try to keep on the safe side...there are some real freakazoids out there...

well, just in case if someone is stalking me...

we''re very poor

I think we need to listen to storm for he has a respectable amount of experience on the Net.

All your arguments to him may or may not be logical, the point is - crooks are not normal logical people.
Is it that hard to keep some info to yourself?

One of our members yelled at us that we are REDICULOSE for trying to protect what we can, her argument was "We are adults".

Now she has so much personal info out that anyone interested can just move a finger to find her. But it's more important to her to feel adult.

An old saying is that smart people learn from experience of others, the rest - only from their own.

That''s awful. But sounds pretty random to me. I''d bet most horrible crime is more random than "stalking".

Just in case: I''ll mention this. My FI brought a few, ahem, firearms with him when he moved in. He''ll go Gonzo on yo a**, Creepy Potential Burgler. Don''t test him.

Hmmm, Maybe I should change my avatar and feature my other doggie:

Storm, thanks for caring!

It''s always nice to have someone look out for your best interests, because it doesn''t happen very often in this life! I, for one, can appreciate a "reality check" once in a while.

thanks for the reminder storm. I often forget there are tons of lurkers out there and I''m not just chatting with my personal friends. Definitely something to just keep in mind..

Yes, it is a good reminder!

I couldn''t agree more. Thanks for reminding us!!!

Widget, you made me laugh out loud!

And just so the burglars know, they are facing this if they come to my house! These are some wicked killer pups!

I agree that it''s important to keep some things private. In fact, it''s the reason my mom and grandma don''t want me posting photos of some of the family jewelry here--they don''t want people to know what they/we have. Not that we keep it in our homes (all of it is kept at the bank), but it could be "tempting" to others. It''s also why I won''t post a photo of myself online--I don''t want people to stalk me for my ring (even though they''d probably just get my fakey considering I wear it whenever I''m not in the company of my hubby)!

Now, if anyone wants my student loans, have at ''em!

Thanks for the reminder, Storm!

Thanks for the caring thought behind making this post!

It is easy to forget that there are many, many more people here watching, than just the one's participating.

So...... someone might be tempted to rob us if we post our financial info... buuuut.. not if we post our 4 carat diamonds?

I am sick sick sick of internet paranoia

Well I stayed away from the personal info type threads because I was uncomfortable with them. My rule of thumb is if I wouldn''t want to discuss this type of info with acquaintances I''m surely not going to feel comfortable posting where anyone can see it.

I don''t think this is a paranoid thread that storm started. He is just trying to look out for our safety on the net. Posting pics of our rings does not tell someone where we live.

It goes much further than being robbed. There are a lot worse things that could happen to us such as identify theft. That will definitely rock your world.

I for one appreciate storm reminding me of something I already know but bears revisiting regularly.

5 carat diamond - $1 000 000, house - $500 000, knowing the difference between them - priceless...

Common sense is not paranoia, just less common.

There are some real crazy people out in the world who you and I would not understand why the heck they'd ever come to a forum, then visit linked personal websites, and bother collecting data, but in reality there are sick people who do. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks Storm, You are a wonderful person who cares!

Thanks for reminding us that our personal info should be gaurded ... The smart ones are gonna listen to you, and the others, well ... lets hope their personal information won''t come to bite them in the butt someday.

I do agree that some caution is important but the bottom line is that if someone REALLY wants to find you...THEY WILL. Even if they don't have the skills to find you themselves, they can pay someone to do it.

If you have spent any amount of time on here or have an email that people have been using or are on a mass email fwd or anything like that, it's easy enough to find someone. Ever heard of ZabaSearch? Once someone has your name, they can find out whatever they want to know about you. They list your address for free...I actually just spent some time looking myself up tonite and also looked up some old boyfriends and friends from school etc. I could have paid $29.95 to get a full background report on them once I found them.

So I'm sorry to say that if anyone on here has let anyone else know their full name or real name and the city or state where you live in, you'd be vulnerable.

There is a difference between being cautious and being paranoid OR having a false sense of security. Personally I feel like that 'how big is your house' thread where people were talking about how huge their houses are or how they have a summer and winter house is more damaging or threatening than that ROTH thread where the information was so vague.

Lastly, people ARE wacko out there, but I am probably much more likely to be attacked walking down my street or my house is more likely to be broken into by someone on my street wanting drugs or whatever than by some random person who finds PS. But yes I do think people should be aware...but not just about how the internet could harbor some crazies...rather how the WORLD in general harbors crazies.

Yes, thank you strmrdr. I try to be good, but your post made me stop and think. I hadn''t fully considered the cumulative effect. I realize now that I have been careless.

i agree with Mara,if someone wants to find you they''ll find you.
