I''ve been told by a lot of people that it''s good to take your ring in for a check up (checking prongs, melee, etc) and cleaning every 6 months. Since I bought my ring online it seems silly to have to part w/ it for a week every 6 months. Should I just bring it to a local jeweler? About how much would this cost? Thanks!

yes take it to someone local, some do it for free and some charge a small amount depending on whats done.
If they find a problem contact your vendor about warranty issues before having it worked on beyond cleaning.

You know, I have had my ring almost 30 years, and I have not done this. Considering that most people at PS know more than the average girl behind the jewelry counter, I''d say get a loupe and check it yourself periodlically. If I happen to be in a jewelry store shopping, I might then ask them to check and clean my rings for me. But I do well to get us to the dentist every 6 months, and the rings can just be checked at home until there is a need to take them in. I recently had mine sized, and my wedding band came back with a loose stone. It has bead-set diamonds and one had come undone with the resizing. But who noticed it? Not the benchman who did the work, not the jeweler, but me. So I took it back the next day and told them to please fix it.

when you buy from a store they usually offer that to you, hey, if you are near by, stop in and we will make sure there are no loose prongs etc...so I do not know what you couldl do, unless you have a b and m place you trust. I do not think you have to leave it though? Just ask them to check it while you wait...

I''ve not had my ring long enough for the 6 month check up yet, but I recently whacked it hard enough to move a prong and dent it.

I took it to a jeweler I''ve bought inexpensive things from, but I doubt they remembered me. They fixed it and cleaned it while I waited, all at no charge.

i bought a 10 and a 30 loupe, also have a classroom of microscopes and an ultrasonic. i check and clean myself.

I clean my ring myself, unless I happen to be in the store where my husband bought it, and then I have it cleaned. They do not do prong inspections on-site, though, so I have never done that--I don''t want to part with it, and don''t trust shipping or that I will get the same stone back. Paranoid much? I know.

It''s a disease.

I became friends with the owner of a local jeweler in my previous town, and she did look at my ring once when I was there as a courtesy and said it was fine. Otherwise, I trust my own eyes and touch to see if the prongs are tight.

Most reputable jewelers, in my experience, are more than happy to inspect and clean a ring at no charge. Try shopping around for one.

i take my ring in every few months to get it checked, but it's mostly to check the prongs and things like that, especially important with melee or eternity IMO...also to check the large diamond prongs. i just don't have the patience to loupe it at home and try to determine if something looks wonky. i have the worst eyes anyway.

i think in some insurance policies they require that you take the ring in to get it checked out every so often so that if it's through negligence that something happens...and a center stone comes loose and is lost, they may not pay out. i don't know HOW they determine that but it was mentioned on here recently...

This sums it up for me too.

A simple do-it-yourself way to check if a prong is tight....take a thin piece of paper..if it slides under the prong, then your prong should be tightened because it will catch on fabric, nylon and other materials.
Sometimes, I see new rings with fibers caught under a prong. This is a warning sign that the prong is not touching the diamond or the diamond was not set correctly. As far as thin or worn prongs...have your local jeweler check your ring periodically.

Thanks for the tip!

And that is exactly how I knew something was wrong with my prong, it had caught a fiber.

I take my ring every 6 months for a prong check/melee check. It''s worth doing, for sure.
