Just wondering if you get a ring online or through Leon M, and say you live far away like California, who do you go to to periodically check your ring to make sure the prongs are tight? And how often?

Would you walk into a local jeweler and trust him with your ring (and 2+ carat) stone?

First, never trust anyone with your 2+ carat stone. If you are going to use a local jeweler to examine your ring, find one with a great reputation and someone you feel comfortable with handling your jewelry.

Now, if you plan on leaving your ring with the jeweler, I would sit down with the jeweler and PLOT OUT YOUR DIAMOND INCLUSIONS (Dont use girldle inscriptions as an ID, they can be buffed off easily). Both parties need to sign off on the contract. Make sure both parties have a copy of the contract.

Also, whatever work is to be done on your ring should be in writing and both parties should sign off. If any decisions are to be made that are not listed on the contract, then you should be contacted, before any work is to be done.

When you go in to get your jewelry, check your diamond through the loupe, make sure it is your diamond. Make sure the work in satisfactory and both parties sign out on the work. Pay the vendor.

This is what I would do if I had a 2+ carat diamond ring.

I have a local jeweler whom I trust and I always bring my ring there to have it cleaned and checked. I never ask them to plot everything for just a cleaning and tightening because then the service probably wouldn't be free anymore! But the key here is a jeweler I TRUST. They also do all the tightening/checking out in the open so I can watch them, which is a nice feeling. I wouldn't bring it into any old store and let them tool around with it anyway. But if I am going to leave the ring with them for a repair, they would write down a very very detailed report on my receipt about my stone for my own assurance.

As long as the ring is insured you can't be crazy about everything IMO as long as it's a jeweler you've worked with before and are comfortable with.
