Guys,

I have been trying to get a perfect ring for my girlfriend. I need to buy it in the next few days. I have read here, and many of you are experts.

Mu budget is around US$2700, yes a little low, but I want a perfect stone for this.

I liked BlueNile but as I read here there are many other companies I should be looking at first.

Round Diamond... I have seen on BN 0.82carrats, Ideal cut, H colour, SI2 clarity for $2370 for the stone and US$390 for the 4 prong white gold solitaire setting. Is this a good deal? For this money can I get anything better than on BN?

PLEASE HELP... !!!!

Any advice is much appreciated and please please keep it coming. There isn''t too much advice that I can be given.

Thanks guys in advance :)

run it in HCA.

Sebastian,

This is just an opinion from an old gray haired guy in this industry who has been around for 37 years, but might be able to shed some light on your quandary.

The most perfect diamond in the world is one that you can afford to give her, and that you will be proud for her to wear as a symbol of your love. And the one that she is proud to receive from you and proud to wear as her commitment to you and your lives together.

Get her a diamond that you are proud to give, that she is proud to wear, and that will sparkle at the party so much that all of her friends will notice.

That is the true definition of the perfect diamond.

Diamonds are romance, my friend. The most perfect engagement diamond in the world is the one that some young lady just said “yes” to wearing.

The rest of it is really just numbers on a paper. And that is not what diamonds are really all about.

Gary Holloway is one of the best I know who can give you what you need to know about the numbers. The rest, is up to what you are proud to give as the symbol of your love.

The scientist may tell you that I am way off base, but I have most likely seen more weddings here than most. And in every one it was the diamond, not the certificate numbers, that everyone was talking about.

Just an opinion.

Welcome!

Can you post a link so we can get the proportions? Also you will need to check that SI2 clarity is eyeclean to your specifications, you will need to ask your BN rep to evaluate it for you.

That is soo true. And I am of the same school.

I just want her to say yes. And she is the type of girl who would with a ring made out of grass... but because of this she deserves the perfect one within that price range, because she is sooo sweet and sooo goood... she deserves the best quality...

I want to give her something that sparkles (most important) and hopefully as big as possible. :))))

What is your recomendation?

Thanks.

Whats HCA? Abbreviation for?

Im clueless
7.gif

HCA=

The Holloway Cut Adviser (
U.S. Patent 7,251,619) estimates a round diamonds appeal based on its potential Light Return, Fire, Scintillation and Spread.

Most people prefer stones that rate 1-2 on a scale where: 0-2 Excellent, 2-4 Very Good, 4-6 Good, 6-8 Fair, and 8-10 Poor. Zero is almost impossible since many of the factors conflict.

You need Total Depth %, Table % and Crown° and Pavilion° angles from AGS and 2006 GIA and IGI reports. Some reports list less accurate rounded Crown % and Pavilion %’s; run the stone and if it scores under 2.0, ask the vendor to get you a
Helium, Sarin or Ogi report with angles.

HCA gets no info on symmetry, polish and minor facets; use it only to reject likely bad performing diamonds to narrow down your final selection.
Ideal-Scope images and independent appraisers can help after that.

The
tutorial explains more about Cut and diamond beauty. A detailed description of HCA is available at www.diamond-cut.com.au.

You can find it at the top of your screen under tools

I thought it''s not good to go below H colour? I want to have it in a white gold setting.

Would colour I be to yellowish?
7.gif

Are there any good diamonds you suggest between 2000-2500 for the diamond? I want it in a 4 prong white gold 18c setting.

My biggest problem is that I don''t have much time, so sending it to an appraiser etc seems to be a long process, hence me talking to you guys who know what you are talking about.

I pretty much want SPARKLE and the bigger the look the diamond has the better it is. Price range 2000-2500 for diamond.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ANYONE AND EVERYONE HELPPPP :))))))))

she deserves perfection :)

Sebastian, I''ve bought an "I" colored stone for my platinum setting. I don''t have the stone mounted yet, but both the gemologist at WhiteFlash and an independent appraiser who examined my setting said I should not notice any yellow in the stone even in the platinum setting, and even next to F-G sidestones. Just make sure that the stone you purchase has an ideal or excellent cut grade.

Who do you suggest I go to to find a good stone for 2000-2500 price range?

Do you know any online shops which I should definitely visit besides BlueNile?

There is soo much to this, I''m learning thanks to all of you. It''s just a lot of info to take in including all the reasearch that I''m trying to do while waiting for answers/suggestions :)

So I can go as low as I and as low as SI2 if I ask the seller if there are any visible by eye chips?

So then the CUT needs to be very very good... Signature Ideal or Ideal. I''m not even thinking to go below ideal. :)

So this is your thoughts?

Can anyone else confirm that this is a good diamond?

You obviously ran all the tests etc. :)

I need sparkle and size and hope that gives it.

How exactly do I ask them? Do I ask before I purchase, and what should I expect them to say? Yes it is eye-clean?

Can''t they lie or just say later - oops sorry I didn''t check properly?!

Surely they would give some certificate or something? no?

PLEASE HELP

Man I''m so happy if I have just found what I am looking for!!!

Julien,

thank you soo much...

I am soo happy and believe now much more that with help of people I''ll be able to find the perfect one.

I just don''t understand one thing...

One is 0.75 carrat and other is 0.83...

Surely the 0.83 is a better buy. Its cheaper by $130 and bigger by 0.08 which isn''t a small difference.

Is it the colour E in comparison to H that creates this big difference?

And also I can see in the 0.75 diamond that the cut is Hearts & Arrows Ideal and the 0.83 is a Ideal. Can anyone please advise what this Hearts & Arrows Ideal cut means?

Thanks guys.

At the moment I am more inclined to the 0.83... am I making the right decision here?

HELP HELP HELP :)

btw everyone rocks.. thanks soo much for all the help already

They won't lie. Lying means returns. Returns don't make anybody happy.

Just be clear about your expectations. 3" away (right up to your eyeballs,) 5" (IN YOUR FACE,) or 8" (a good, intimate looksie)

I'd probably go with the one that is cleaner...not much difference between a .75 and a .83

Just be clear about your expectations. 3" away (right up to your eyeballs) or 8" (a good, intimate looksie)

Sorry mate,

I just don''t know what you mean by the above?

Are they the answers that I should expect them to say? Or is this a range?

SO I call them up, say that I''m interested in those two and to tell me if they are eye-clean, and whichever one is cleaner I buy? Sounds great.

How long does it take them to tell me if they are eye-clean? And I obviously use the above method - 3" away (right up to your eyeballs) or 8" (a good, intimate looksie)

Which one is better a 3" or 8"?

Please clarify, I do understand that I am asking something stupid here too :))) But please have this last bit of patience. I trust you and hopefully I can get one of these two :))))))))))))

THANK you for your kind help.

Hi there,

Totally not an expert but I thought you might want to look at a few other options -- slightly smaller than the BN one but really looks fantastic!

0.73 H/SI2 AGS/A Cut Above H&A -- $2554

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-912922.htm

WF has a lovely 14K gold 4 prong Tiffany setting for just $250!!
Check it out here: http://www.whiteflash.com/golden-wardrobe/Gold_Details.aspx?ItemCode=ST4PW&CategID=13

These two together would keep you in a great color with a stone that looks wicked eye clean (but defnintely ask!!) for just $104 over your budget at $2804.00.

OR, you could try one of these stones (both AGS/A Cut Above H&A) if you are willing to go down in color a bit for a terrific look that stays spot on your budget:

Here''s a fantastic looking .711 I/SI1 for $2484 (total of $2734 with setting)
http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-912930.htm#

OR even this fantastic looking .76 J/VS2 for $2395 (total of $2645 with setting)
http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-540895.htm

Anywhoo -- good luck with you search!!!

Just be clear about your expectations. 3'' away (right up to your eyeballs) or 8'' (a good, intimate looksie)

Sorry mate,

I just don''t know what you mean by the above?

It means, how far away do you need to be to see inclusions, if at all?

Are they the answers that I should expect them to say? Or is this a range?

SO I call them up, say that I''m interested in those two and to tell me if they are eye-clean, and whichever one is cleaner I buy? Sounds great.

Sure. If equally clean, are they equally pretty? If equally pretty, get the bigger one.

How long does it take them to tell me if they are eye-clean? And I obviously use the above method - 3'' away (right up to your eyeballs) or 8'' (a good, intimate looksie)

Depends where the stone is, how busy they are, etc.

Which one is better a 3'' or 8''?

3" is extremely uncomfortable unless you are near-sighted. 8" is probably the beginning of comfortable for most people with normal vision. 8" is good enough IMO, but other people may have different ideas.

Please clarify, I do understand that I am asking something stupid here too :))) But please have this last bit of patience. I trust you and hopefully I can get one of these two :))))))))))))

Cocosgirl picked some great diamonds from Whiteflash. You won't need to fool with an independent appraisal with those beauties. I know a lot of people have been happy with WF although I bought my diamond from GoodOldGold.com.

Are you set on a round? Here is a gorgeous Princess cut from GoodOldGold.com http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4440/

Both Whiteflash and GoodOldGold can set it for you in a simple setting. If you don't like any of these, call Jonathan at GOG and tell him what you want. He can get you anything.

I was of the thought that 3" is better than 8" because you have to bring it closer to the eye to see the inclusions?!?

What I gather from your response is that 8" or even more inches is better?

Have I got that right?

So pretty mych I call them and ask how many inches away untiul you see the inclusions? And they will say... the 0.75 is 8" and 0.83 is 16"

so i smile and say 0.83 please

correct?

sorry i need to get this right as i want to get it right, perfect.

you have helped me sooo much

thanks

neverendingupgrade great minds think alike! honestly if it were me, i would probably go for the H/SI2 just OVER my budget, OR max out the stone size with the .76 J/VS2 which will literally not show much size difference from a .8-ish stone.

I do think the H/SI2 is just kicking!
30.gif

bad_krusty,

I don''t think it is that scientific. I think that "eye clean" refers to "at half an arm''s length away", the distance that most people view diamonds from. Don''t get too hung up on size over quality.

Did you look at the Whiteflash or GoodOldGold diamonds? If you really like that diamond from BlueNile, I think they will let you hold it for 48 hours until you decide. That way you can make an informed decision. You sound a little feverish about it, and you should not feel that way when buying a diamond!

Thanks Neverendingupdate,

I will have a look at the ones you suggested also. What do you think of the two JulieN has suggested. I like them a lot. I will have to compare them to the ones you sent.

I am just learning about the eye-clean and how that works. Once I know this and understand it, I will be able to come to some sort of conclusion.

Please look at JulieN''s suggested ones and tell me what you think if you have time.

Many thanks :)

I WANT that .76 ct. J/VS2!!! Wouldn''t that make a lovely halo ring?
31.gif

Thanks COCO for your feedback too

I just want SPARKLE

and the Bigger the better

PLEASE tell me what you''d go for

and it HAS to be in a WHITE GOLD 18k simple Solitaire 4 prong setting :)))))

I look forward to your suggestions :)

The one Julien recommended, the H/SI2 look promising but I would want to ask JA if it is really eyeclean (that black inclusion in the middle would make me nervous).

I love the WF J/VS2 for cut, size and clarity -- big bang for your buck IMHO.

The WF H/SI2 rocks color and sharp sharp arrows -- teensy bit smaller but if color is important you can''t miss with that one.

You can get the 4 prong setting from WF in 18K white gold for $325.00 which is a wicked awesome price (IMHO!). So, for either of these two you would end up at:

J/VS2 with ring: $2720.00
H/SI2 with ring: $2879.00

OR, to confuse you even further (SO SORRY) the one deelight sent from GOG or this smoking stone from GOG:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4464/

I would make a few calls to WF or GOG and they will find you the smokin-est smokin'' stone that you FF will absolutely DIE for. And no grass required!

Can''t wait to see what you decide on! sl

bad_krusty

When you ask for our opinion of what we would go for, please understand that these are just "our opinions" and nothing more. I wanted to preface what I am about to say because all of the diamonds appear to be ideal cuts, so cut is not the issue. No, I did not run the HCA on the diamonds. Besides, that is just a tool to rule out dogs.

Having said that, you should probably know that I have a mental lower boundary of SI1. What that means is that if it were me (which is what you were asking), I would rule out the SI2's. THAT IS JUST MY OPINION! Some people have lower color boundaries. I personally like ideal rounds down to K color because I like the warmth. So out of the list, I like the GOG princess .84 ct. I/VS2 at 5.19 x 5.11 mm (I love square stones) or the WF round .76 ct. J/VS2 at 5.95 x 5.96 mm.

If you are OK with SI2's (and I want to make it clear that there is nothing wrong with SI2's--we all have our preferences!), then I would go for the largest one, the James Allen .83 H/SI2 which measures 6.14 x 6.07 mm. That is a good size diamond. It faces up as large as my 1.05 ct. Jubilee cut! The JA .75 ct. E/SI2 is quite large at 5.90 x 5.92 mm. E colors are very white, and they cost more. And Cocosgirl is right, the WF .73 H/SI2 is kickin' at 5.76 x 5.79 mm. My Jubilee cut is H/SI1 and I LOVE it!

Regarding the BlueNile choice, I did just run that one on the HCA, and its score was "2.7--Very Good, worth buying if the price is right". That tells me that the cut is not so good as the James Allen, Whiteflash and GoodOldGold ideal ones. That is why the price is lower for comparable sizes. Most ideal cut diamonds fall below a 2. Look for the AGS 0 rating. Ideal cut=Sparkle!!! So, wow, you have an evening's work cut out for you trying to decide!

OH BOY I have to echo neverendingupgrade to caveat all my posts by saying -- this is definitely just my OPINION! I can totally appreciate the low clarity threshold -- for me I have the best of both worlds that I am totally cool with lower colors (G-K) and clarity is just not an issue if I''m looking at fantastically cut stones. I recently picked out a pair of gorgeous studs (that put my own J/SI2''s to SHAME) for my sister''s 35th that were H/SI1, not even certed (brother-in-law was so beyond irritated by my standards and refused to buy online) and I have to say they were still light years beyond mine in terms of cut and color and look fantastic at a really great price.

SO. Really, the choice is yours. I will still highly recommend giving the folks at WF or GOG (Marie & Jonathan have been a huge help to me with info in the past) a shout to see what else they may have in-stock or can get in stock that will rock your world!

Here''s to true love!
