pennquaker - help with Benjamin Moore?

Hi Pennquaker,

I hope you don''t mind the attention, but I recall some of your posts about your love of BM paint! And, I definitely love your pictures of your gorgeous home!!

I''m working with a decorator for our new home. The home is not brand new, so I''m stuck with certain things like oak cabinets (I prefer white).

Anyway, she recommended a BM paint color - shelburne buff. I painted a little on the walls in different areas and it seems a little too "gold" or even "yellowish" to me. However, the color I picked prior to this is way too khaki with too many green undertones. I gravitate toward the more khaki colors and the oak cabinets and floors in this new house need a warmer color. Any other recommendations? I think the shelburne buff is a nice color, but not one I would have chosen on my own so I''m not sure how I will like the end result.

This color is going to be used in the entry, kitchen, family room, stairs and upstairs hallway so I''m going to be looking at it a LOT of it.

I'm not Penn, but I just wanted to add that I could have saved myself A LOT of time and money by chatting with the Ben Moore guy....at this great little shop, they are so skilled and really help you...I was like listen, this color isn't what I want bc of XYZ but it's close...they pointed out undertones I didn't realize and suggested colors and best of all, made me custom colors without me having to buy the quarts....They made me the most heavenly true blue gray....You can talk to the Ben Moore guys and tell them that it's too gold and have them tone it down...they will do it for you on the spot and put it on a little card so you can bring it home!!!

I'm also a huge fan of Revere Pewter...I didn't that in my living room and did it half as light (custom color again) in the den!
... but rereading your post, it might be a tad cooler and modern than you want....it does have a touch of green too


I love google-ing a color name and see what comes up...people post a lot of pictures...especially on apartment therapy.com or brownstoner.com
Just bc your designer can put the colors together doesn't mean you should think you have to like a particular color!

And PS...paint those cabinets! it's soooo easy......sand and prime and paint....I'm doing my ugly oak bathroom vanity now!

moremoremore, is right, if you talk to the BM guy, he could be able to fix the problem, but sometimes this is a risky. You have to have a very knowledgeable person when dealing with the formulas.

First, is painting the cabinetry white not an option? That''s one of the easiest ways to give your kitchen a refresh.

The color that I would personally recommend is Squire Hill Buff. It''s very neutral and I think you would like it. However, instead of painting all of these areas the same color. I would probably paint the entry a shade darker. The color that I painted my old house with, Blond Wood, is on the same strip and is one shade lighter than Squire Hill Buff. I think they both work very well together.

That's what I did Penn....the same color looks so different in different locations....I used similar colors and some of the same colors cut in half to get a uniform look but with some interest...


The best part about having the Benn Moore guy do it, is that you don't have to buy it...he makes it up for you and you can bring the card home knowing that you at least described the color elements you described!!!...I'd find a nice small Ben Moore store like I have by me and then it's a safe bet for sure....

I definitely do not want to paint the cabinets. I''m not even sure white cabinets would work in this house since the kitchen and family room are kind of one large room and I don''t think I would like the look of white cabinets in this situation. I don''t mind the wood, it''s just that I would have chosen a different choice of wood. Regardless, I''m going to work with what I have for now...
Anyway, I have four colors on the wall now. I actually like the Shelburne Buff the best of all of them, but I''m still worried it''s too gold/yellow. I tried Lenox Tan and I think it appears too green, but the BM guy told me it had "red" in it. I don''t see it...

I''m going to make a trip back to the store and see if the Squire Hill comes in the sample size.

you might simply save yourself a lot of trouble by asking them to take the color and tone down the gold...it is free and painless...best of luck...

One thing that I forgot to mention. Buy some GE Reveal light bulbs. They make a whole world a of difference because the light they emit is white instead of yellow.

Since my last post, I''ve tried Lenox Tan, Decautur Buff and Tyler Taupe. Not loving any of them! They didn''t have Squire Hill Buff in a sample. The color I like the best in theory is Lenox Tan, but it looks "greenish" in my house and it doesn''t make any sense to me because I don''t consider it a khaki color. I''m still leaning toward shelburne buff or decatur buff at this point. I think the Tyler Taupe could rmaybe work, but I''m worried it''s too dark. I''m so sick of thinking about this!!! I''ve been to the BM store about 10 times now!
