Pear vs. pear comparison -- help!!!

I had questions before about a pear and was able to order another one in to compare it to. Now I''m totally stuck!! I thought I was hung up on the bowtie, but am realizing that the diamond I had had no worse a bowtie than the one I just got. So which one (if either) would YOU pick?? I''ll post stats in a little bit.... I''s rather the numbers NOT do the talking...

On a personal level, I prefer the slightly shorter, more rounded stone for a ring. I might prefer the longer shape for a pendant. Now, this is purely personal. I have not examined any specs and the lighting does not show a great deal of visual difference in performance.

For what it worth, you have a first opinion.

Based on *just* these photos, I like the one on the left in your hand better because it looks livlier to me (which could totally be the way the light is hitting the two stones) and I also tend toward fatter pears. But believe me, I''m not expert; I''m only going off what I see on the screen.

I like the fatter pear as well..(don''t know if it''s the light either but it seems whiter?) I like fatter pears for a solitare type ring and slightly longer pears for sidestones or pendants, JMHO

Dee Jay -- i''ve also usually had a preference for fatter pears...

Belle-- best I can do as far as photos go. I don''t have the technology to capture the light (everyone says they''re pics don''t do their stones justice, right?) I think it''s fair to make a preference based on the pics though, yes...

Princess V --thank you -- I probably should have mentioned that this is for my engagement ring and will be in a halo setting with an eternity band. (think firegoddess''s)

I was having a hard time coming up with a preference, but for some reason now that I''m envisioning it with its halo, I like the shorter fatter one better too! Somehow I feel like the halo will look weird on too pointy a pear? Not that there''s THAT much of a difference between the two, so go with whichever strikes you more!

Yup, I had read your posts before so I remembered *vaguely* that you wanted it in a halo like FG''s btw have you checked out DiamondLil''s Quest pear halo..to die for as well!!! FG and DiamondLiL''s rings have totally got me into pears...even lusting after one whereas before I didn''t really like them. Now I have to admit they are one of my favorite fancy shapes.

I have seen DiamondLil''s pear in person and may I just say...I''ve never seen a pear sparkle so much! She really has a well cut beauty on her hands. (not to mention ginormous!)

Do you sacrifice size for "slightly" better fire in a stone?? I have kind of big fingers (size 6 1/2 to 7), but I can''t help but think the littler stone is slightly better (more fire, a bit better on the color). hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

the pics are really really good jen, i just wanted to make sure they were translating well online. i definitely have a preference for the smaller stone. i like the body that it has and the color looks appealing. the bigger one is, as others have said, too long and pointy. also, i''m not liking the color as much and i think i can see inclusions around the 4 o'' clock area.

i vote the smaller (though not by much visually!) one.

I''m having somewhat of a hard time commenting because in all of the side by side pictures, one stone is tilted in some way and therefore I can''t make a true direct comparison. The closer, single shots seem more accurate but are they both completely flat (or taken at the same angle)? If the shorter pear is completely flat in its single picture, then I would prefer that one over the bigger one, based solely on the last pictures of each alone.

I took the pics in my hands -- really the best I could do, so they''re not perfect, and both stones are quite a bit alike, but I think you are seeing what the others are --- there''s a bit more life in the smaller stone. So I guess I''m just wondering now if it''s worth getting the smaller size for the little bit more sparkle? I never thought I''d ever even have a carat, so I shouldn''t choose size, right? The halo will be nice for that too. Thanks FG!

Yeah - I was about to reply to the thread and a coworker slammed his hand in a door and I had to take him to the doctor. The timing!

From those last two individual pictures the smaller stone does seem more lively and would be my preference. Interestingly, a quick math division makes it seem that both have a l to w ratio of almost 1.5 yet they don''t seem like it (smaller one is 1.48, bigger one is 1.46)? The bigger one seems more elongated to me for some reason. My l to w is 1.56, for reference. Diamondlil''s is 1.67.

In this case, though I love size....I would go for the smaller stone. Being a fancy they don''t sparkle like rounds do anyway, so you want as much sparkle as you can get. Besides, the halo is going to make the ring look WAY huge...my fingers are by no means small, but look how much real estate is taken up with the halo. Nobody used to comment on the pear before the halo, now I get comments at least 2-3 times a week.

Yah, yours looks enormous!! I just love this setting and my life would have been a whole bunch easier if I''d had a pic of your ring (hence: found PS) when I first started describing my idea to jewelers. Oh, there blank stares. One place was on the ball --totally willing to do it right (for too much $$$) Thank G for PS!

Anyway, I mentioned something about the length-to-width thing in LIW. They''re 1.47 and 1.48 respectively, and I like the fatter look too. With everyone here being pretty much on the same page about it as I am, it looks like that''s the one I''ll get (but I have to send the pretty dilver/diamond heart bracelet back to Union

) I suppose I''ll get over it!

I''m just so relieved to know that I was freaking myself out about the bowtie and it''s gonna be there.. I decided having the pear is worth it! Thanks for your help in this!

No problem. I know you were freaking out about the bowtie in the first stone but I didn''t see anything of concern. Of course, it does take some getting used to on the whole, so it''s good that you saw another stone that was deemed beautiful by an expert and saw the bowtie was no more than the original stone.

I''m glad that seeing my setting helped you. Diamondlil and I were getting our rings done at almost the same time and we commiserated quite a lot. Neither of us had seen many halo settings for pears at all - I think I had 2 pictures to work off of at the time, and a bunch of drawings I made. It also went horribly wrong the first time, and was quite a saga. At least you have something very close/identical to work with so hopefully it will be smooth sailing for you!

My coworker doesn''t have any rings, hehehe, and thankfully the finger isn''t broken. Just a little drama!

I''m sorry I missed this the first time through, sk8rjen. I''ve been so busy lately, I''m not as attentive to PS as I should be. I try my best to jump on pear threads -- heehee.

The amazing thing between these two stones is how different they look even though the l/w ratio is very similar. To me it looks like the fatter one has more bulge as the lines approach the point where the slimmer one is very straight. I like the look of the fatter one for multiple reasons -- not only the shape, but it also looks crisper than the other. If you like the shape of both, I''d pick the brighter, crisper stone. The halo will make either one look huge. I wore my pear in a plain solitare for about a year before I decided on the halo setting (then had a horrible experience with a jeweler and lived without it for a long time, but that''s another story). When I saw my pear in the halo for the first time, I was shocked! It looks about double the size.
