I'm trying to build a ring but having difficulties in finding sides that work.

I love the look of the chubby pears but the ones that are really chubby seem to overpower the middle stone.

How hard is it usually to look for stones that are well balanced?
My center stone is 7.6x6.6mm

The skinnier pears are 5.3x6.5 0.55ct
The fatter pears are 5.8x4.2mm 0.88ct

How unreasonable is it to ask for another set of pears to see?

I really like the proportions of the 1st pair. That said, it's your ring and you can ask to see as many pairs as you want until you are satisfied.

All I can tell you is that people who have set a 3 ct center with side pears have gone with .80ish total weight on the side pears, so I think maybe you need to go a little smaller on the pears. I'd say .50 ctw or smaller. The first set just may be the wrong shape but I wouldn't go larger than these.
