Hi all!

I would like thoughts on this stone.

Shape: Pear

Weight: 1.25

Clarity: SI2

Measurements:

7.88 x 5.89 x 4.14

Depth: 70.3

Table: 54%

No cert.

Not clarity treated.

would you say most of the carat weight is on the bottom of the stone? Is this a fat or skinny shaped pear?

thanks in advance!!

Well, Summer, I presume you have not seen this stone in person. Fancy shapes are very difficult to judge by numbers alone. I will say the cut on this one is rather deep. Also, the length-to-width ratio on this is 1.33:1 which is very fat. Have you looked at the AGA cut grade charts and rules? Check out www.gemappraisers.com. The information there will give you the information you need to help you make an educated decision.

Oh! Wery nice outline... not skinny, but wide pears have a good talent at being the more brilliant for the type. This could be a very intersting stone, hard to judge by the numbers alone. Big depth, small table may mean a steep crown - so lots of 'volume' above the girdle.

The stone could look great in terms of brilliance, but the depth will surely make it look small for the weight (compared to the expected depth around 60%).

All in all, the cut parameters are far from norm and could motivate a discount for this reason, and the stone must be seen before final purchase: no way to get a definite impression from these specs

This would be the outline of a pear with the proportions you have posted (picture from Gemappraisers.com).

About size and weight... you may want to consider the surface face-up of the stone as visible size: your stones has a face-up area of about 32 square milimeters and a more mainstream cut pear (of 60% depth) of the same weight would be 42 square milimeters (so 30% of size is lost in that extra 10% depth

Thank you for your advice everyone!

I have decided against purchasing this stone.

The hunt continues!

Ideal L/W according to GIA is 1.50-1.75 to 1. So this is a little chubby, but some people like that. It looks like it is deep and may have a well defined bow tie. can't give you anymore information on cut without the crown height and girdle thickness. Another thing to look for is high shoulders (looks like it is wearing shoulder pads). It has a nice table. Need to know the color and the asking $$$. Pear shapes are not the most popular these days so you might be able to get a good discount if you ask for it.

Hi Basset,

The color is J and the price is $1400.

The price is pretty low to start, how much do you think I can try to get off of this price if I did decide to go for it?

That is really cheep. I don't know if you can get any off because it looks like he wants to get it out of stock and get some cash flow. I do not like that it is not certed. Who is claiming that it is a J SI2. Old saying is that if it seems to be to good to be true, it is. Beware.

Wow, Summer, that is cheap. I agree with Basset Hound, something does not sound right. Also remember that fancy shapes show color more than well-cut round brilliants. If this J is not certified, it may even be a K or L. I'm a bit of a color snob, so anything below a G on a fancy cut would not even be a consideration, especially with its other issues (too deep/too fat/no cert).

Yeah, you're all right. I am sure it is too good to be true. I made a quick phone call to the seller a little earlier today. He said usually when a stone has no cert, the SI2 grade it was given really means it's an I1 though GIA eyes. He said it is better to stick with a stone with a cert.

I saw the stone listed on the internet. The seller doesn't know what the stone looks like in person since it is not at his site. But like you have all said, he has said also that the stone is cut too deep and therefore will look smaller.

Thank you for your advice, it has been extremely helpful.

My hunt continues !
