pear shaped diamond engagement ring

Hi Group
i heard of this group while doing some resesarch for my pear shaped diamond
hoping to get some expert advice from this group

my biggest concern is the brillance of the diamond
looking for between D-F, 1.5-1.7ct. VS2 and up.

i ran across this one on JA. what are your thoughts?

and this on BN. the BN one proportion wise looks great to me, but am worried about the strong blue flourescne. what is the groups thought on that?

You will pay a premium for D/E and IF/VVS grades, so buy in full awareness of that fact.

Is the preference for high colour and high clarity because of cultural reasons? Asian markets often favour Colourless and VVS/IF over larger stones in lower colours, for example.

F and VS grades could be an ideal middle ground that looks basically exactly like the higher grades on the finger but at a lower price


In terms of those two stones, my personal opinion is that they have pretty minimal bow-tie (the dark effect across the middle when head-on), which is great All Pears have some 'mush' (i.e. not clearly defined faceting) towards the pointy ends, so these are no different, but the larger facets towards the middle are pretty 'strong' and look to be working well.

An ASETscope image would help identify light leakage.


If you're happy to post your budget, we may be able to identify other options for you

I think both of these look pretty decent (as in above average). Most people dont do this well on there first attempt to identify nice pears so kudos to you.

well my budget is under 20k. the key thing for me isn't the grading on paper, but rather, its look to the eye. the brilliance and fire.

Any light containing UV wavelengths has the potential to trigger the fluorescence within a diamond, I believe, but there are different wavelengths within light and different stones have different trigger wavelengths, so it is not necessarily a guaranteed effect in any given lighting environment.

From what I've read on here, anything less than Strong or Very Strong fluor is unlikely to have any noticeable effect in day-to-day lighting.

Good chunky faceting at the fat end but the skinny end seems to 'window' (go see-through) at quite a lot of angles.

Fat end is perhaps a bit 'quiet' but active across the stone, bright, not much windowing, and the higher crown might give some coloured fire, I think.

An interesting/unusual shape, big size!, maybe not as bright/contrast-y as other stones but seems to be working the virtual facets pretty well.


Like I say, I'm no expert, so see what you think! Don't forget to look at spread/size, as carat weight and physical size depend a lot on how the stone is cut.

I like it! As mentioned above you pay a premium for colorless, particularly a D. I love a nice crisp D color stone and have one myself. But isn't it over your budget?

yes it is a little over haha. but for the right stone...i can make an exception.

what do you guys think about this blackened area on this view of a diamond?

I like it too. The above angle is hardly an angle that you'll be viewing from. When distinct facets get turned away or angled away from the light
source they will go dark. When the stone is turned to a more "normal" viewing angle those facets are returning light and are white/bright. You
have facets that are all "off" at the same time grouped together. This does not bother me too much because its not at a normal viewing angle. If
you saw an area of darkness when the stones was facing you then I would be concerned. My 2 cents.
