Dear experts, my boyfriend and I have just purchased a pear shaped diamond ring.We purchased it without a cert, however after getting educated I insisted on a cert and the jeweler sent it out (EGL USA) to have it certified. We paid for it and these are the results!!! In my excitement to find a 2.01 carat diamond this is what we settled on and believe me, after trying to discern whether this was a good purchase I feel as though we may have settled. My boyfriend loves it, but knowing a little bit more than I knew before, I'm not conviced in my heart. It is past the 30 day return and am not sure what to do. Help!!!

Depth 54.9%
Table 59%
Crown 11.4%
Pavillion 38.7%
Girdle thin to sl.thick faceted
Culet small
Polish very good

Hi Paula and welcome

Can you also provide the clarity and colour results too please, and the dimensions so we can help you further? Also the symmetry and if there is any flourescense? I think that a little " buyer's remorse" is normal and to learn more after your purchase can cast doubt. However what is the important thing here is if you and your fiance love the diamond. It is very easy to get hung up on the numbers - they are important but don't tell the whole story, especially with fancy cuts such as pears.

It''s really difficult to go by the numbers on fancy cuts, so don''t worry and don''t get hung up on them! What''s most important is whether or not you love it. Did you love it when you bought it? What''s different now? Book knowledge, when you should be trusting your eyes more. Do you have any pictures?

Sorry you''re feeling down! Hope you feel better soon. I have an uncerted pear too, but mine''s only 0.38ct!

Hi Experts, I''m sorry about not providing clarity and color results,it is a D color SI3. The price was 9,300 (not including sales tax and cert) I''m a bit concerned about Pavillion% and Depth. It is my understanding that with a 38.7% pavillion the fish eye effect is very likely!!! The depth percentage looks a bit shallow as well. It is set in a two toned band. (White gold band with yellow gold on both sides of the diamond. Thaks so much for your comments!!! PJT

Boy... I forgot the dimensions...11.68 X 7.34 x 4.03mm Now I think that is everything!!!

Is it eye-clean to you? How did the clarity strike you before you had it certed? SI3 doesn't exist for AGS or GIA, so it would have been an I1 with those labs....which depending on the inclusions isn't necessarily a fatal flaw. If you have a near-eye-clean SI3 that you loved BEFORE you saw any ##s I'd sleep on it and not worry too much.....JCJD is right about fancies being more necessary to grade by eyes than by ##s. An EGL D color would still be colorless (perhaps E or F) with other labs, so it sounds like it must be a very white stone......if you love it, don't sweat the stats!! And we love PICTURES around here!!!

Yes please post a pic, we would love to see your pear!!

I agree with the above. If you loved the stone before you found PS, don''t let the numbers feed your buyer''s remorse. I know it is hard. We ALL question our decisions when it comes to such a big purchase.

Please take pics for us, and don''t forget to include a hand shot!

If it is a very white and eyeclean SI3, which some aren''t then I would call it good. Sometimes you get a bow tie effect with pears, my 2ct pear doesn''t have one but if yours does that isn''t necessarily a problem. Also compared to mine, yours will look larger due to the dimensions[ Try not to worry, as I said previously it is easy to get hung up with the numbers, but with fancy shapes they can be misleading sometimes - it is best to use your eyes. I think what you are going through is normal and many of us go through it with such a big purchase, the commital to one stone, but try to remember that is a lovely, much larger than average diamond you have there which you were initially excited about, focus on that and the symbolism of it and don''t worry about the numbers! Opinions and tastes can differ here as to what numbers constitute the " best" diamond - although with rounds the parameters are far tighter, but fancies are a different kettle of fish! Numbers can be a huge help indeed, but they don''t totally dictate the magic and glamour of a diamond - only the eyes of the one who wears it can do that. Some diamonds which are Ideal Cut can lack that magic as many experts can attest and not be the best performers. I hope this helps to reassure you a bit, yes we love pics and enjoy your lovely diamond. You can always use your new knowledge on your next diamond purchase

Sounds to me like you have a beautiful diamond. Even an EGL D is a colorless diamond and should be very blindingly bright. I want to see pictures though!!!

The numbers will drive you crazy. Try to remember that they are only for knowing what you are buying and getting what you are paying for. Unless the diamond is unattractive, which it obviously is not, or unless you totally overpaid for it, try to forget about the numbers. I say that and I do exactly the same thing you are. Should I have gotten a diamond with less color. Should I have gotten one not so deep with more spread. Should I have gotten a round instead. OMG, you can drive yourself nuts. That''s one bad thing about PS, you get so much info that you can literally obsess over proportion and percentages. As far as settling, we all (well, most of us) have to settle on something. It''s either size, color, clarity or cut. I suppose even if you had a $50,000 budget, you might have to settle if you wanted a pink or blue diamond, so really, we all "settle." I have to reiterate (and start taking my own advice) that you would not have chosen the diamond if it were ugly, and the cert is simply to make sure you got what you paid for. Beyond that, let it go. It''s a done deal. Enjoy it and wear it with delight and love it for what it is.

Okay, now to pound that into my OWN head, LOL! Thou shalt not look at other diamonds and second guess thyself! (It should be an engagment commandment.)

As others have said, it''s easy to second guess yourself, especially with fancy cuts which don''t have clear cut ''ideal'' criteria like the rounds do. A lot of the magic in these fancy cut stones must be seen with the eye. You clearly loved the stone when you purchased it, so it must have resonated with you. To come back such a high color grade - it must be blindingly white (my preference!) and the inclusion(s) lending the SI3 (I1) clarity grade clearly were either not visible to you or not particularly noticeable. So relax and enjoy it! (And show us some pictures!)

Dear Folks, Thanks soooo much for all the positive comments!!! My first post felt somewhat awkward but OMG I''m so glad I did. As soon as I get a picture I''ll post!!! Blessings to all!!!!
