My fiance proposed several years ago and we''re getting married next fall. The original ring he proposed with was on a college student budget and now I get to upgrade the ring. This week I''m in love with a pear shape diamond and a pave halo setting. We want to stay around $2000 for the stone and $1500 for the setting.

I have found several loose diamonds online. I liked this one (http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Pear-Diamond-1210602.asp) but I also never noticed the bow tie in an oval until it was pointed out to me on this site so any comments would be appreciated.

I saw a few threads about customizing a halo for a pear because it depends on the shape of the diamond. Will the James Allen website customize a halo setting? I''m in Colorado and have yet to find a favorite local jeweler. How involved is the online/customizing process?

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

Just fixing the link...

Its hard to tell from the photo, its a nicely shaped pear and yes most will show a bow tie, ask for an Idealscope image and see if they can run a Sarin scan to get the crown height on this diamond. With the bow tie, ask for their gemologist Julianna to inspect the diamond and tell you to what extent the bow tie shows itself.

I don't see why JA couldn't do a customized halo but you would need to discuss it with them as to what is possible.

It certainly is possible to do a customised halo setting for the pear. I had JA customised my pear earring "jackets" with halo's and the quality was quite good and price fairly reasonable.

Not sure what you mean by "how involved" is the process? I guesss it'd depend on how complicated the setting it. But basically, you call them and tell them what you're looking for and you discuss the details of the setting that you'd like; they may offer their suggestions; you may end up revising your original ideas or not; and you finalise the details. Then, they go into production and voila.

It looks like a very pleasing stone...get the extra info that lorelei mentioned to help you decide. Good luck!
