I thought nuts were bad for dogs. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Peanuts are legumes, not nuts. They're not in the same food family as almonds, etc., but I would think they should be avoided as I did a quick google and nobody agrees with each other on whether PB or just peanuts are safe.

If you DO give your dog peanut butter, I'd go with the unsalted organic, non-hydrogenated kind. You can get it at Trader Joe's for under $2.

Apparently the only nut that dogs should never have is a macademia nut. I''m not sure what the toxic compound is (I''m not even sure if vets know), but it can cause muscle tremors or paralysis. I''ve heard that walnuts are also bad, but that one is more debateable. Apparently all other nuts are perfectly fine.

I did some research on it awhile back when I started giving my dog Glucosomine and Chondroitin pills every day--the only way he''ll take them is if they are dipped in peanut butter.

The only way our dog will take pills is if they are dipped in peanut butter. Thanks for the info NewEnglandLady!

My baby boy doggy (he is 9) will only take his heartworm pill if I put a very light coating of peanut butter on it. I try to mix it in his cookie crumbs, but he finds it and leaves it there hahaha it's too cute, but doesn't work!. I make sure he drinks water immediately after the pill because peanut butter is very dry and even for humas is known as a choking hazard food. I would never give him peanut butter otherwise and the heartworm pill is so tiny, but so is he, 3lbs.

Golden, that''s cute. Luckily for us, Petrie loves her heartworm pill. I just put everything in her buster cube, food and heartworm and she finishes every last bit.

Peanut butter must be okay since we have used it for years to give medicine almost daily. I just read a list of dangerous foods the other day but I don''t remember them all....onions, grapes, chocolate...

Peanut butter is totally fine. There are tons of PB flavored treats on the market for dogs.

Our dog- the 90 pound labradoodle in my avatar- LOVES peanut butter. Has to lick the knife clean after I make a PB sandwich- I should not admit that I let him do this. :)

We''ve always given our dogs their medicine coated in PB-no problems and the puppy loves it!

My dog loves PB. She has PB flavored treats.

PB is one thing dogs go nuts over.

Yup PB is fine for doggies :)

We use PB to help medicate the dogs. We also use it in kong toys.

I will be the first to admit that as a kid I used to give our dog a glob of PB just so I could laugh hysterically at the way he "tongued" it for 10 minutes.

I swear it looked like he was talking. I''m so bad. But the dog live a long healthy life so I don''t think it was really bad for him.

I did some research and found out that peanuts are not nuts but legumes, therefore should be fine for dogs.

I stuff my dogs kongs with PB, crunchy. Have done for months and months, they have lovely shiny fur and they have gained some much needed weight (very active dogs).

Oh wait, MC already mentioned they are legumes. Please excuse my Monday brain fart.

Thank you so much for posting this list.

We have friends that plant a veggie garden every year. Their little dog digs up their onions and garlic and chews on them. They think it is funny. It is not. I keep suggesting to my friend to put a fence around the garden, before Honey Bear gets really sick. I hope one day it will not be too late. I feel like smacking her in the head at times. I have known her for over 40 years.

Ur welcome! Your friends need to put a fence believe it or not the toxins in onions and garlic can literally kill your dog. My mom gave my dog grapes one time and I freaked out took him to the vet for bloodwork as little as 4 grapes can cause kidney failure its crazy.

It''s a wonder onions and garlic don''t harm us too...we are all mammals right. I realize there are obvious different with alkali/acid content in saliva and stomach bile.

Onions and garlic bother my stomach, so I can just imagine what they do to the poor dogs.
