Alright, after hours reading and searching over a period of several months, I''ve drawn one conclusion: I don''t think I''ll be in the diamond business for a living. Oh yes, I''ve learned all about table sizes, depth percentages, scintilation, brilliance, spreads, and other technical things that confuse (possibly scare) both my girlfriend and my mother. Yet, when I sit down to sift through the data, examine the lab reports and carefully study the ASET images, I find myself panicking. Buckets of sweat pour off my face as the anxiety continues to build and I''m left with just one overwheliming question: "how the heck am I going to know if this is the right one."

Thus, I leave it to you, the PSers and saviours of hundreds, nay thousands of men, to look for the one perfect diamond for my one perfect girl [that''s within my budget of course :) ]

This is what I''m looking for: the best light performing princess that''s around 3/4 of a carot. Scintillation and fire is important. I was thinking a Whitflash or Infinity Diamond, but I''m open for your pics. I need to keep the budget below $3,000. Help me PSers.... you''re my only hope.

We visited Good old Gold 2 weeks ago, and Jonathan had some great princess cuts. He used them as educational tools (we were interested in Asscher cuts) and two of the princess cuts were fabulous - almost made me change my mind :-).

Jonathan is often on the site (Rhino is his user name) - I''m sure he can help you - or do a search on their site. Look for the ASET images below the photos. Some will knock your socks off.

Good luck with your search!

HI:

Budget is for stone and setting, correct? What kind of setting, please?

cheers--Sharon

At this point in the game, it is a matter of selecting a vendor who appeals to the way you think and White Flash, Good Old Gold and Infinity produce an exceptional princess cut diamond. I would contact a vendor who works with Infinity and White Flash and determine what they have available within your price range and desired range of characteristics - as a vendor I can not make specific recommendations, but I'll tell you that I absolutely love the AGS visual performance grade as it applies to princess cut diamonds and find that it takes a lot of guesswork out of the equation!

Here are some options to consider.
0.7ct G SI2
0.764ct H VS2
0.722ct G VS1
0.72ct E SI2

All great choices! The only thing I''d add is that the girdle on the 3rd one may be an issue. Ask WF if the "very thin" part will put the diamond at risk for breakage.

If it were me, I''d probably pick the second diamond because it''s the biggest by carat weight (though the GOG and Infinity stones face up about the same size), VS2 is virtually guaranteed to be eye-clean, and H color is no problem at all. If color were more important to me (and the Infinity can be verified eye-clean from all angles at 5"), I''d choose the Infinity.

It may also come down to the setting - do any of these vendors carry a particular setting that you''re interested in?

Y''all have been so very helpful. This is fantastic! The $3,000 budget is just for the stone. I''ve already seen a ring online that I fell in love with (see link below) but am unsure if I can purcahse the ring seperately from the diamond. I''d love to hear your comments about this ring and whether it would work with my diamond purchase.

You would need to check with Stein Diamonds Dave whether the ring could be purchased without a diamond. As to getting the diamond and setting from separate sellers, one thing to watch out for is to ask whoever sets the diamond if they will take responsibility should the diamond get damaged, this is rare but does happen. Usually if you have the seller provide both diamond and setting they will assume responsibility should anything happen to the diamond, so best to check.

Thank you again for your comments. I''m leaning towards the Infinity (last one on the list), but I noticed that it has a very small table (61.3). Does that mean it will look small? I don''t want it to be a small looking .72 diamond.

No it will be a great diamond, the diameter measurement is what indicates face up size or spread, not the table size.

That ring may work, but keep in mind the proportion between the center stone and sidestones. The ring in the picture looks like it''s built for a much larger center stone. If you get it for a 0.72 or so, the sidestones may end up looking almost as large as the center. Some people like this look, and others don''t. I personally prefer a larger center stone and tiny sidestones, as in something like this. All a matter of personal preference.

Also, not sure how set you are on Stein Diamonds, but James Allen has almost that exact same setting for a lot less. I believe they will sell you a setting without a diamond in it, or your Infinity could be sent directly to them for setting. Good luck!

It should not be a problem to have that ring made with side stones proportionate to the center. It is a very beautiful looking ring.
