I thought this was pretty funny: Palin takes prank call from fake French president.
9.gif

Oh, and for the record, I would have posted this even if the prankee had been Joe Biden instead of Sarah Palin.

That is so wrong, yet so hilarious. I''m torn!

Just laugh lucky! You know you want to!

(I did!!!I want to hear it for myself!)

Yeah, how embarrassing. I wonder who she has working for her that allowed her to take this call.

*cringe*

I''m glad it wasn''t an american radio station. I do feel bad for her. She sounded like a teenager meeting a celebrity, not a governor speaking to a head of state. How embarrassing...

Comments worth reading:

A letter from Montreal

So I listened to that episode while cringing the whole time.

It's hard not to feel bad for her (at least for a moment... before remembering the sort of power she's after and all the things she wants to do with it).

Anyways, here are some Canadian tidbits for you:

-She failed to recognise when he gave a completely false name for the Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper (RIGHT after saying that people had been wrong about her lack of foreign policy experience).

-Then they followed that up by referring to "Sarkozy's good friend" the prime minister of Quebec. Quebec is a seperatist province within Canada, and does not have a prime minister. Can you imagine the sort of trouble someone SO ignorant of the politics of their own neighbouring coutry could get you into on the world stage?

-The song Carla Bruni supposedly wrote for her was called "du rouge a levres sur une cochonne" i.e. lipstick on a pig

PS: Just for the general information of some previous posters who were questionning the accent of the pranksters- they are in fact francophone.... but their accent is definitely played up big time.

*************************

Palin was pissed that she was passed to an assistant before the President

In other words she expected the President of France to wait on the line for HER assistant.

Ok there's about 9 things f'ed up about that.

*******************************

Palin asked Biden if she could call him "Joe"

But Sarah Palin called the "President" of France "Nicholas" without getting his permission...this woman doesn't show basic courtesy -- let alone protocol!

*******************************
And apparently no awareness That Sarkozy endorsed Obama!

There goes those foreign policy creds once again!

*******************************
ON SOCIALISM:

From the transcript:

FNS: I just want to be sure, I don’t’ quite understand the phenomenon "Joe the Plumber," that’s not your husband, right?
SP: Mmhmm, that’s into my husband but he’s a normal American who just works hard and doesn’t want government to take his money.

FNS: Yes, yes, I understand, we have the equivalent of Joe the Plumber in France, it’s called, "Marcel, the guy with bread under his armpit, oui."
SP: Right. That’s what it’s all about, is the middle class, and government needing to work for them. You’re a very good example for us here.

She lambasts Obama for being a "socialist", and yet, she thinks effing France is a good example?! How's this not problematic for her campaign?

I went back and forth between laughing my butt off and feeling rather horrified that someone so oblivious is trying for the 2nd highest office in the country.

That''s just sad. I''ve got houseplants with better sense.

I cannot listen to this. If I knew the true extinct of her unreadiness, to put it very kindly, I would not be able to sleep at night.

LOL. You can''t make this stuff up.

I don''t agree with McCain''s political platform and think his VP pick was a huge mistake. I''ve lived in Canada (Toronto, not Montreal) and loved the Canadian brand of comedy which I found to be irreverent and hilarious (does anyone remember Humble and Fred on CFNY?). I didn''t think this was funny at all, just mean.

I agree.

To be fair, she thought she was talking to the president of France. Would you correct the president of France? I don''t think McCain, Obama or Biden would have either. Not to mention, after listening to the audio, he is very hard to understand with that accent. Sounds like she was trying to be courteous. I''ve been in that position before where I kind of had to go with the flow and pretend I understood someone when I didn''t. We also have to remember that these DJs were pranking her and purposefully set up the questions in that way. It sounded like she was doing her best while thinking "what the....?"

They''ve also pranked
Mick Jagger
Britney Spears
Bill Gates
Former French President Jacques Chirac (rated one of the top 30 moments in radio history)
and Nicolas Sarkozy himself

It''s what they do.

So while I think that the prank was extremely funny (especially the "love to kill animals mm mmm mmm" part and the **** reference) I''m not going to judge her for being the victim of a joke. I wouldn''t judge any of the other candidates either.

Do you have houseplants with more sense than Bill Gates, too?

I felt bad for her. That doesn''t make her any less of a foreign policy nightmare.

She was unqualified before the call, and continues to be after. Let''s keep in mind that we want to improve US standing in the world after 8 yrs of Bush, and Palin makes us a laughingstock once again. Literally.

How the world would vote in this election...

another world vote with more votes

Also, I saw this:

Lost in translation

A French Canadian reader emails with some of the linguistic and cultural references you may have missed in that prank call, just in case you were snickering at Sarah Palin for having missed stuff.

- The first man on the call (introducing Sarkozy) presents himself as "Frank L''Ouvrier": Frank The Worker.

- When he talks about going hunting by helicopter, and says "like we say in French, ''On pourrait tuer des bébés phoques aussi'': "We could kill some baby seals, too".

- He asks her if she has met the prime minister of Quebec, "Richard Z. Sirois" (instead of Jean Charest) : Richard Z. Sirois was one of the well-known comedians of "Rock et Belles Oreilles", a French Canadian comedy group (started in 1981, dissolved in 1995). Sirois is now co-host of the show "Les cerveaux de l''info" at that radio station.

- When he says that his wife singer Carla Bruni wrote a song for her, he says "In French it''s called "Du rouge à lèvres sur une cochonne" or if you prefer in English - and he sings - "Joe The Plumber.. it''s his life, Joe The Plumber": the French means "Lipstick on a pig" -- ....but "cochonne", the feminine of "cochon" - pig, is largely used for "dirty girl" (sexual connotation).

Bill Gates is only answerable to his stockholders, he''s not trying to run the country. So if Bill makes an @ss of himself, it''s frankly no big deal to me.

Everyone, please keep in mind, I was not trying to make some kind of "Big Statement" by posting this. As I said in my original post, I would have posted the link even if Joe Biden had been the victim of the prank. I was simply trying to inject a little lighthearted fun into this otherwise very contentious forum.

Personally, I don''t think it was "mean." These guys are radio show hosts who are KNOWN for pranking celebrities. It''s not like they went out of their way to pick on Palin . . . it''s just what they do. When she chose to run for Vice President, she knew (or should have known) that she was opening herself up to this kind of humor, just like any other public figure. If she can''t take the heat, she needs to get out of the kitchen.

Honestly, and maybe it''s just me being old and crotchety, I think the whole thing was in incredibly bad taste. I didn''t laugh, I cringed, in much the same way I always cringe watching American Idol''s horrid singers who haven''t a clue that they''re horrid. But society has moved that way here in the US. I guess Canada is no different. I really do feel sorry for her....and then....like Trillionaire, I remember her unbelievable hubris and arrogance in assuming she is capable of of being one step away from the presidency, and my compassion evaporates and my heart hardens. This prank hardly adds to the piles of evidence that she is completely unqualified for such a position, and it demeans everyone involved in it.

Anyone who has read my posts knows I think Palin is an incurious, arrogant rube who is either unaware of, or worse, even PROUD of her ignorance, but sort of in her defense I''ve got to wonder, is THIS the calibre of staff she and McCain will have around them? Is everything going to be in such a casual state of disarray that just anyone can call the Whitehouse??
I mean for God''s sake, doesn''t the person manning the phones have CALLER ID, just for a start? It sounds like darn near anyone could call her. Am I the only one who thinks this is bizarre, that a call like this could have made it through? So much for McCain''s "security"...
20.gif

Since I''ve been in quote mode of late, I think this quote pretty much says it all for this issue:

The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. ~ Bertrand Russell

I get the joke. I thought it was funny. We should laugh, not put this in the "Look at how stupid Palin is!" file. She had no reason to believe she wasn''t talking to Sarkozy, and you could barely understand him. If she would have corrected the "President" and said something like, "actually I think you''re referring to..." Would people be like "zomg see how she corrected a foreign leader like that! Who does she think she is? Ahhhh!" I think so. The Palin bashing for every reason under the sun is just getting a little old, IMO.

Yes, Lucky, I agree. The bashing of all the candidates for any reason under the sun is getting more than a little old, IMO.

And I did feel bad for Palin for about two seconds while I was listening to the audio. However, as I said before, she opened herself up to this kind of thing when she chose to run for VP. It's part of the job. I do think someone dropped the ball by even putting that call through to Palin, but I'm sure these guys are good at getting around the assistants of the public figures that they prank. I mean, they were able to talk to Bill Gates for goodness sake! How many of us would be able to get through to him if we tried to make that call? I'm sure they are very convincing when they try to get their "targets" on the phone.

I'm sorry I even posted this. I didn't realize it would become such an issue. I guess I should have known better. Maybe I should take a break from ATW, at least until the election is over. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Irish, I agree. You didn''t offend me by posting it! I just knew that instead of laughing people were going to take advantage of this thread to talk about how awful she is.
And I actually think that Palin is being a good sport about it, judging by the statement that was released (unless she flipped out somewhere and I missed it?). so I don''t think that she feels above this kind of humor. I''m GLAD you shared it. I wouldn''t have seen it otherwise!

Amen!
Everyone should take responsibility for their own actions. If Palin and the GOP were so ill-prepared that they fall into pranker''s trap that easily, is it them who I feel embarrassed for.

Irish you didn''t offend me either, I know you intended no ill in posting it. FI and I listed to it on Greta last night laughing about it!

I actually told him that while it is comical, it''s ridiculous the McCain camp let the call get through. What dorkazoids for that one! And like you..I am also tired of the all candidates being bashed for everything under the sun. But hey looks like she''s in good "idiotic" company with Bill Gates, Chirac, and Sarkozy himself. If I were her I''d be impressed with that.
31.gif
9.gif
Btw, please don''t leave.

Irish,

You are not allowed to leave. Only 2 more days until the election! Hang in there!!!!
9.gif

Palin really got killed on that one. I felt a bit sorry for her as well; I am certainly not going to blame her for not understanding all the French stuff that was thrown in ... she does not speak French!! And when you are caught up in the moment, there is not a whole lot you can do even if things sound a bit iffy. BUT!!! What about (not)screening the calls?? That is totally unacceptable. I would have fired that assistant right away.

Hilarious!
