Our landlord has very graciously offered to paint a few select rooms in our new home in shades of our choosing. I've got the bedrooms covered, but I'm stuck choosing something for the kitchen.

It's a large room (kitchen and large eat-in area combined) with white cabinets, doors and molding. The problem, for me, is the forest green countertop with honey wood trim. I was originally thinking a pale, yet cheery yellow...but will it clash with the countertop? If so, can anyone suggest a complimentary shade?

The landlord uses Sherwin Williams paint, so I need to choose a SW shade.

The countertop (they may look black on your screen and in this small screen shot, but they're actually a dark green):

My sis''s kitchen has light wood and hunter green. Her "cheery yellow" turned into mustard.

I think you could go with a teracotta, camel, or sage for a soothing effect. If you want something more vibrant, I''d go more orange or even cranberry.

It''s great that your landlord is letting you put some of yourselves into your home!

What about a neutral peachy color like SW August Moon? I think it is such a flattering color and it doesn''t clash with anything.

Because of the hunter green?

This is ''Glisten Yellow'' from SW. I think it has a little green in it, which might work? It''s hard to tell since Sherwin Williams has no example kitchens with forest green/honey countertops.

I''m more into muted shades, so I''ll check out something camel-ish. That could work. Thanks, shiny!

The yellow is about the color of my dining room, and I just LOVE it! It''s so cheerful. Otherwise, I''d go with maybe a light beige, perhaps?

ladypirate- I like August Moon! I''ll run it by the husband.

joflier- I think it''s a nice, cheery color too! I just don''t want to get it up and hate it because of those darn green countertops. We''d just replace them if we owned, but we rent.

I guess I should also mention that the flooring in the kitchen is a honey-colored wood.

What do you all think about a silvery sage green? Would it be weird to paint a kitchen green? I''m stumped.

I''m not married to the idea of a yellow kitchen, but I''ve always wanted one.

Personally, I''d vote no on the sage. It''s a pretty color, but goes much better with whites or creams, imo.

Well, the cabinets are white. The honey color I included with the other swatches represents the color of the wood floors.

Do white cabinets change your mind?

Can you get a couple of those little sample paint jars and paint a few areas in the room to see which you like best?

I like yellow, and I like green. Our kitchen is green.

Unfortunately, we can't unless we want to paint ourselves (and we don't!). Our landlord is having the rooms painted before we move in, and we don't live in the city we're moving to.

If you want a green, then you should look more in the celery (yellow-green) range. Your silver sage is a blue-green and that''s going to clash with the countertops.

I'd get as color like Benjamin moore's Brookline Beige (a camel kind of beige, really pretty!)

Good point! Thanks. :)

bella- Thanks for the suggestion! I'll do a mockup with beige to see how I like it.

Hm, how about a beautiful shade of light grey? I wouldn''t normally think grey in a kitchen but my neighbor did it and it looks stunning!

I think it is the hunter green that brought in the "mustard" tones, but I''m really not sure how or why.

The sage I''m referring to is more celery, too. I think because of your white cabinets sage should still be in the running.

I really think a camel could be a great color since you have so much other color going on too.

You can get a large piece of cardboard and get little samples of paint just to put the colors next to each other. OR you can get several samples and paint each one on a separate cardboard and then take it to the house and play with them in the kitchen.

When selecting your yellow color, go grayer and less yellow than you think you want (especially if you like muted colors). Color on walls reflect off each other making a color appear brighter. The color yellow has a great tendency to do this.

The white cabinets would definitely make a difference, then. Just make sure the green doesn''t have blue undertones. I think someone suggested celery - that would be better.

feb- I hadn''t thought of grey. I''ll check it out. Thanks!

hera- Thanks for the tip!

I''m thinking of sticking with pale yellow and hoping it works. I like yellow with the honey floors and white cabinets. The countertop is a small part of the room.

I appreciate everyone''s advice!

Hey, I''m late to the party, but here is a yellow. I find yellow to be an energizing color and good for a kitchen. The counters are a greeny-grey-black speckled granite.
