I am not sure where you are, but if you happen to be in NoVa or close by, I wanted to make sure you knew about these (and any one lurking that may wish to show support)...

Candle light vigils Wednesday, 4/18:
http://www.ncr.vt.edu/news/news_item.2007-04-17.0065875955

Orange and Maroon Effect Friday, 4/20:
"Hokie Hope," an alumni-led declaration of a national "Orange and Maroon Effect" day. Everyone, Hokie or not, is encouraged to wear Orange and Maroon to show their support.

I did not realize you just graduated last year. I am so sorry for the students you knew. DH and I graduated in 2002, but as an engineering major, he knows the names of some of the professors. Other wise we have been uneffected beyond having kids be from "our backyard" or near my hometown. I watched the convocation yesterday and felt the most uplifted by Nikki Giovanni and even more so by the chanting of "lets go Hokies."

I''ve got Hokie Maroon on today. I will pair it with the orange on Friday. Hubby''s alma mata NC State held a vigil last night. In so many ways they are so connected offering basically the same ciriculum.

If I recall correctly, isn''t Blenhiem a Hokie?

Thanks so much njc. I have been thinking about you and your husband too. It is just hard because Tech is still "home" to my fiance and I, as I am sure you and your husband feel. And then Ryan... well I can''t really comprehend it. I think my fiance and I are going to go to one of the vigils tonight. I was also thinking about handing our ribbons tomorrow. Nikki Giovanni speach was great and I am so proud to be a Hokie.

F&I - Awesome! I am totally sporting the O&M friday... not sure my boss or client would appreciate it any other day. I''m not sure about Blenhiem. I dont know that she has ever said... I do know her FI graduated from VMI though and she went nearby.

Ind - After seeing several people on the Metro yesterday with their hats and sweatshirts on, I swung by Michaels and picked up some ribbon. I tied some to my work bag, our poor puppies collar and made up some with pins to leave in our break room here at work. It has made me feel a little better, I hope it does the same for you. Funny you mention the "home" thing. I wrote an email to my mother this morning saying I knew those not Hokies were affected, but that it was MY campus, MY second home, MY second family. I lived for 20 years in my hometown, 4.5 at Tech and 3 this June in NoVa.

If there is anything I can do for you... please let me know.

We went to the vigil tonight. There were more people than I was expecting and it was really comforting. Then I made the mistake of watching the news and I am shaking now. I know it isn''t rational but I am sitting here scared and shaking. It is strange that fear is the only emotion that has set in. Nothing else feels real about the situation... but seeing those pictures and that tape. Ugh I don''t know what I am saying.

We went to Old town last night. I agree it was nice and comforting. I watched the tapes when I got home as well. What a loon. It just makes me more sad and wondering who else is a walking time bomb I come into contact with everyday. I had some guy push me out of the way so he could get on the Metro this morning. I yelled back at him "EXCUSE YOU" and glared at him as I walked by. I sat down and starting thinking, oh God, he could snap and I am stuck on this moving metal box!

I am sorry you are so scared. I havent felt that... anger and sorrow mostly. I guess I am scared for copy cat crimes and normal behavoirs that are seen as bad like Kalieghs post about her sons school. Reminds me of post 9/11 and every time you heard a plane, you had to check and make sure it was nice and high in the sky.

Have you read any of the statements from other schools? Id say half of them have made me cry... truly touching. Here is a link if you havent seen them.

Are you handing out ribbons today? I made a sign to put up in our break room about Hokie Hope and Gov. Kaines day of mourning.

I don''t know if I am going to be able to hand out ribbons now. We are probably going to go to a memorial service for our friend and it is over 8 hours away. I wasn''t scared of anything happening it was just the pictures and video made me scared there could be someone like that. Especially because I was there when he was. But I''m not scared now, just sad. I look forward to seeing a see of orange and maroon on Friday and I am sure we will take ribbons to give out wherever we stop.

Loon - yep. I am disappointed that NBC chose to air the video, audio & pics. At first I thought maybe we could learn something from them. After a few seconds, I turned it off. It was like watching **** - learned nothing - felt dirty. My husband said there were signs on Tech Campus saying "Hokies come home. Media GO home."

At the end of the day, the Hokie Nation should be proud at the way they handled themselves through this difficult time. Tomorrow we will all wear your colors and the Nation will become part of Hokie Nation. If only we could all live up to your community!

Thanks so much fire&ice! It was amazing today. Everywhere you went people were looking for or talking about Orange and Maroon. I am really upset Fred Phelps and his "church" are protesting the memorials but I guess the only thing we can do is ignore them and appreciate how wonderful the Hokie community is.

Havent heard about the Fred Phelps thing... guess I will try and look it up.

F&I - I am sad NBC choose to show the videos as well. I dont feel any better after watching it. I am sure the whole campus and town is sick of the media. I''m sick of them and I''m 250 miles away!

I have been trying to decide had I been there, would I have stayed or gone home this week. I already know my mother would have driven down as soon as she heard (she told me), but I think I would have stayed.

this is what is on facebook about the phelps thing:

Fred Phelps and the psychos at Westboro Baptist Church are planning to protest at EVERY FUNERAL and MEMORIAL SERVICE that they learn of regarding the students murdered on April 16th!

The Westboro Baptist "Church" is an organization that teaches a message of hate. They do not believe that Christ died for everyone in the world, only the elite chosen. They are saying that because higher education teaches rebeliousness against God that these students deserved to die.

This wikipedia article is very informative:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church

I would encourage you NOT to visit their website since they make money on the hits they get, but if you feel that you must I cannot stop you.

We have got to put a stop to this! We cannot let this happen here! Invite all of your friends and their friends to keep them out of Blacksburg and away from the funerals of those that we have lost.

I will continue to update the group when we find out when and where funerals will take place so we can show up in force and keep these cretins out!

We now have a petition online that will allow us to give concrete proof that there are people willing to stand up to them.

SIGN THE PETITION HERE:

They talked about the protests on our local news. In VA, you are fined $2500.00 for interupting a funeral. Supposedly, they are on the look out for them w/ the fine already in place & the right to escort them off the premise - at least here locally.

FWIW - our local CBS station has a VT logo in place of theirs. It was nice to see.

I am happy to say they did not protest. Mike Gallagher (sp?) offered them 3 hours of radio time in exchange for not protesting at any Virginia Tech funerals or memorial services. I am so thankful. Ryan''s memorial service was beautiful and I thought I would share the poem Maya Angelou sent and the comic they showed in the slideshow. njc and fire&ice - thank you so much for your kind thoughts and words. I can tell you are both Hokies at heart.

When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

ind - so glad they didnt protest! That is a great poem and cartoon. I think it is wonderful you were able to go down to Ryan''s memorial service. I bet there were a ton of people. There have been a lot of people showing up for the local kids.

We went to visit DHs parents this weekend... its a big Penn State area... students wore orange t-shirts with maroon nittany lions on them and made a VT instead of the PSU during their Spring Game. Thought that was pretty cool. Fitting tribute to all and Jeremy Herbstritt.

Not just a Hokie at heart... full blooded.

I''m so sorry for the loss of your friend Ind, but am glad they didn''t protest. What a horribly, HORRIBLY, mean thing to do. I didn''t click on the link, despite my curiosity, when I read that you said they got money for each hit. Yick!

skippy and poptart- thank you both. I really am lucky, though, because I got to be friends with Ryan and I have amazing memories of him. Even at his memorial service everyone laughed with each other, which is exactly what he would have wanted. I am really glad the protesters didn''t come. I don''t know if I could control myself. The local veterans association did come though. They were going to surround the protesters with American flags so the family wouldn''t have to see them and their signs but luckily they didn''t need to. They stayed the whole time anyway to show support. Part of the band came down too, and they played our fight song and some other beautiful pieces of music. I am gonna cry again just thinking of it.

njc- I knew you were a Hokie and I know how close VT is to your heart, which is what I meant. I am glad Penn State did so much for Jeremy. I didn''t know him but I know his gf, she was on my hall freshman year. I am sure his family needs all the support they can get and I am glad they are getting it. I know we don''t know each other but I feel close to you, knowing we love our school so much. We are Virginia Tech.

Lovely poem. Thanks for posting it. Ryan sounds like a remarkable soul. Stay strong Hokies!

My husband goes to the Campus tomorrow. I think it will be cathartic for him to see all the memorials.

I am glad you liked the poem. It really seems to hit how I am feeling. I hope your DH has a good time on campus. I can''t wait to go back. Talking about all the Ryan memories brought up all the places we loved to go and eat on campus and I want to just walk around. Hokies are staying strong and I am so proud!
