I am considering a few stones, but am not ready to post just yet...

but...what would you consider a great price for a 5.5mm L SI2 (supposedly eye clean) in great shape with no nicks, abrasions, etc.. EC/OEC with a pretty and sparkly facet pattern, but not quite flowery or checkerboard.

For this project, I care most about size and sparkle and am flexible on the rest

$350 for a super steal More realistic, $500 to $800 seems to be what they go for in that size range. Prices on ebay are so all over the map, honestly, and given how its a total guess what the specs are on most of these things... throw a dart!

Anything under 500 is great. Anything from 500-700 is good. Anything over 750 is, IMO probably overpriced.

No matter WHAT the listed price is or what the auction style. ALWAYS ask if the price is negotiable.

There is a gorgeous 50 point OEC on ebay that was listed for 550. And didn't sell for several weeks at that price so, inexplicably, the buyer decided to raise the price to 850. I don't even pretend to understand the logic of it. But I bet if you message them and ask them if they will accept 550 still will. And even if they don't... they may come back with a counter between 550 and 850, which would save you money.

Good point about making an offer no matter what.

No it wasn't relisted again. Shoot, I thought it was still available. Good call. It was beautiful. Great photography too, which always helps.

I think this is a pretty good price on a fantastic looking OEC. The mount is authentic and either the ring can be kept as is, or the mount resold for someone else to use. THe diamond will look a lot bigger freed of the prongs. You can find slightly better deals on ebay, but the risk factor (as you yourself experienced) is much higher. The only way you pay less than this is if you buy a diamond with very very poor photography and then it is a crap shoot, or you buy a stone that is SI2 or some such that maybe miraculously turns out to be eye clean or *not* Si2.
