Was looking at some ebay material...found this. Just wondering, do amethysts ever come in bottle-green colors or is it one of ebay typical "rare specimen"? There are many amethysts and citrines on this website, some of them look too good to be true. Am I unfair to this vendor?

Thank you, MZ! I have seen praseolite many times, a nice stone, but I have never seen it coming in bottle-green color. I did not find it in this guy's website although some of his rings are interesting.

photoshopped?

glass?

synthetic of some sort?

eta: and did you see this? http://www.greenamethysts.com/green-ame ... -facts.htm

i'm not sure that a jeweler would be able to tell the difference between real and synthetic as they state....but a gemologist would for sure.

Glass or synthetic... His store is full of bottle-green amethysts and blue-green ametrines. Just wanted people's opinion. There are so many pitfalls here.

At the same time, found some really nice vendors and bought a spessartine from one of trusted ebayers on the way.

I have to take time off and work at photos of my new James Meyer ring with Lake Barringo Ruby from Gene. Just telling people of what is to come...

With that green, it is a crime (as in FTC) to call it Amethyst. Greened Amethyst would be Prasiolite (of course). Natural stones even with irradiation, just don't ever get that green, not from heating. I doubt it is natural or even started as purple quartz. Or it is one heck of photoshopping (the white on the background doesn't suggest a big swing). But when you get that color, size and clarity... if it is too good to be true...

BTW - I have a piece of emerald cut glass about that same color that I got from my wirewrapping instructor for $10 (markups are allowed and forgiven - William Holland instructors are not paid from what I know.)

sure is green isn't it..I sure don't like the term green amethyst..isn't that an oxymoron? Greened amethyst is much better. I would steer clear of that anyways, cras..you seem to be snagging some very nice stones anyways..no sense in taking a chance with that one..where is this spess you were mentioning?? hint hint..pics..pics

This spess. is on the way. Photos, as you know, are cr..py. I shall try to take Uli's stone...lovely.
BTW - I got a STUNNING ring from James Meyer made with Gene's Lake Barringo ruby. The ruby is so fine...I bought the second one on his website... Can not guess why no one has bought it before. It is a lovely stone... Looks in-between a ruby and a very good pink sapphire... doesn't matter much to me.

I posted these amethyst pics more as a joke. I mean, all I need to do is to keep beer bottles and polish pieces of broken glass. And sell them on ebay. I'd give people good deal on it!

I don't know if this helps but in 2007 I bought a "green Kunzite" (i.e. Hiddenite) from Ebay for very little money. The colour when it arrived was absolutely bright emerald green (very much like the picture you've posted). As soon as I opened the packet, the smell of petrol hit me. Within one week, the "green Kunzite" had faded to a pale green and within a few months only had a tiny amount of green. It's now almost transparent with a hint of a tint of green. What is it? I have no idea! It does have all the chemical makeup of Hiddenite BUT it's obviously been treated to within a inch of it's life and is one very unhappy gemstone! So, if it looks strange, chances are it is!

I remember the ole petrol stone before LD..I asked around and no one can figure out why the petrol smell..I have a whole bunch of irridated green kunzites(spodumenes) here..tucked away in my desk drawer..color is fantastic but they are staying away from the light..I had mentioned this before about kunzites ..got a little more info which I posted on the other site but will do so here
this is from my dude in pakistan who zaps topaz, kunzites and tourmalines
"The radiation is done in Pakistan Atomic Energy in Lahore. Not only stones they irradiate but they do dry fruits and grocery also for killing germs etc for keeping them fresh for a long time.. People here send kunzite, tourmaline and topaz for irradiating them.. kunzite become green first and then some people here in peshawar treat them more to make them pink.. Tourmalines when in light color, they irradiate and make them deep color. The hot pink ones come natural too.. but they are a very very rare and expensive"

Hi Amguy - I remember you posting that. Thank you for re-posting. I'm pretty sure that the stone was irradiated but just happened to be one of those that wasn't stable. It's never really been in sunlight so I'm guessing whatever process they used just didn't take! I've still got no idea about the petrol either but it must be something weird and wonderful!!!
