This is my first post and already I can say that this website is awesome. I discovered the site 24 hours ago and I’ve spent the greater part of my time since then browsing around absorbing it all. Don’t tell my boss. Now I want to step up the search. I am looking for an Asscher in the 1.3-1.7 carat range. Correct me if I''m wrong, but I imagine that I should be looking at Color of G and higher and Clarity of VS2 and higher. Price is not firm, but my searches lead me to believe that I’m probably in the $10-12K range. Using the resources of this site, I have an idea of what I should be looking for; but I am trying to do this on my own so I would appreciate any input.

One particularly memorable post that I read by srmrdr suggested the following. This is where I''m getting lost. Table, Depth, and Ratio are easy enough, but I can''t figure out the other characteristics (notably, Crown)

Table: High 50''s - Low 60''s Crown: 10-15% Clipped Corner Square Defined/Concentric Squares
Depth: 65% - 75% L/W: ~1 Strong/Even Windmills 10 Mile Deep Look

I haven’t decided on a setting, but if it helps, I know that my girlfriend likes this one: Asscher Setting. Can anyone offer suggestions or steer me in the right direction? I could have plenty of time or very little time, depending upon which one of us you ask

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Easy: contact Jon at Good Old Gold www.goodoldgold.com then post the vid and links too the data on the stones for help.

Hard: start reading the asscher threads in the FAQ.

crown is crown height and should be 10% or more.
It is the distance from the top of the stone(table) too the top of the girdle(widest part of the stone)
Over 15% is fine the 10%-15% has been change to over 10% with newer research.
Some of the best these days are in the 17% range.

Wow...thanks for the quick reply! Since my head is still spinning from the hard strategy, I''ll email Jon before I go back to the literature.
I actually read that post and this one, which is also very close to my criteria. Regarding the crown, is bigger always better? My confusion comes from the objective criteria like (windmills, squares and depth). If an Asscher is purchased online, how would you suggest evaluating these?

That is why jon at GOG rocks! The videos are super helpful in viewing different stone personalities and that really can narrow it down. As I am sure you have figured... different stones appeal to different people and one just has to talk to you! I actually keep changing my mind... sometimes I like widesteps... sometimes a drop cut looks better to me. It gets confusing- but if you use a ps vender like Jon at GOG... and then expert second opinion like storm... you will be deciding only between top notch looks. enjoy!

pictures and video and a vendor who knows asschers.

crown height needs to be balanced with the rest of the stone.
Since most asschers these days are on the deep side the crown height is on the high side.
