So I''ve figured out what I want (sort of). I love the idea of a longer stone (oval or cushion around 2.2-2.7 carats) but the bowtie in the oval scares me a bit, while cushions are just too deep and look much smaller than an oval for the same carat weight. The only other option is a round with pears- I don''t really like rounds but for some reason I adore a round with pears. I would probably set the oval in a 3 oval ring (much smaller ovals for the side stones though).

Any opinions?
My issue with the round/pears is that round diamonds are so common and I want something a bit different, but I''m scared I''ll get bored with the oval. My friend pointed out that rounds look like earrings...and they kind of do.

One other issue with the oval is that I want a l/w ratio of around 1.3 (fat oval) so it narrows down the selection. I can get a good round diamond anytime...

Well, my oval has virtually NO bowtie. And..it is I color and SI2--table 55, depth 67. The depth might be considered a bit deep for some, but I think it makes for great fire. Here is a link that another ps''er found that might be helpful: http://www.sunjewelry.com/diamond-education-oval.html
You should go see several before choosing, or get someone to describe it/them to you over the phone. I did before having mine shipped in.
Ovals are romantic and look rootin'' tootin'' good on the hand (if I don''t say so myself!).

If you want something different and not a round, how about a "square hearts and arrows" from GOG? Here is an example: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/1255/. They are well-cut and don''t have any bowties and face up fairly well compared to fancy cuts. They aren''t oblong though...

No Bowtie? Wow. I like 3 stone oval rings but I looked at some and it looked as if you could ''see the band'' going across the back in the middle of the stone- but we realized there was NO platinum there- it was 3 bow ties next to eachother. What is the l/w of your oval?
GOG has a bunch of interesting cuts, but I will probably get my stone from a wholesaler on 47th street who has known my family for 50 years or so. I looked at stones they had the other day and would not carry an SI (which is what I want) so as a favor they will show me some SI stones. I did see a gorgeous 2.01 E VS1, but it wasn''t enough stone for me for the $$. I wish cushions weren''t so deep!

Why won''t they carry SI''s? A well cut oval won''t show a visible bow tie. I absolutley love ovals and pears but ended up buying a Jubilee for my new wedding set, and today I just bought an ideal cut round for a right hand ring just because I love the optics. I bought both from GOG. My next diamond will be a pear, definitely.

Let me see, my oval is length 9.37, width 6.33, depth 4.24mm
No bowtie. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
You need to look, or ask the vendor, until you find one without a bowtie, or minimally one. Also, I cannot see any type of inclusion whatsoever and mine is SI2.
And, believe me, this is my 22nd diamond trade up over the years and I know what I''m talking about (or enough to be dangerous, ha ha.) (Sounds crazy, but I got my first diamond at our 16th wedding anniversary, so I''m not sentimental. I wore a plain gold band for years.)
This should be a fun process along the way, so take your time and enjoy it.
