Hi, I am looking to buy oval diamond earrings, but have to buy each diamond separately.

For the following ranges, depth 57-63, table 56-61, l/w 1.4-1.5, carat 0.7-0.8.

Obviously my vendor doesnt have two oval diamonds with the exact sames dimensions and I would like the diamonds to look as alike as possible.
I guess that the most important similitude is the carat and the l/w but the table and depth surely have an importance too.

The most similar diamonds I have found so far :

Diamond 1:

Carat 0.71
Dimensions: 7.1x5.04x3.03
L/w: 1.41
Table: 57
Depth : 60.1

Diamond 2:

C: 0.72
Dim: 7.05x4.95x3.1
L/w: 1.42
Table: 58
Depth: 62.7

Will those 2 stones look similar if not what would we be an acceptable margin? Is the difference in depth too important?

Thanks a lot for your help

Can you get pictures of those stones? You can't really choose fancy cuts by the numbers and especially when you want a matched pair. I think you need to start over with another jeweler who can call some stones in and try to match a pair for you. Jonathan at Good Old Gold is very good at choosing well cut stones, for example.

Hi unfortunately those stones are from BN and they can't send me picture.

The problem is that it's for a bday comming very soon so I don't have more time to research and only BN have oval diamonds in the spec I am looking for. I also would feel uncomfortable ordering from somewhere else because it is an order for Europe and I already had some positive experience with them.

I understand that matching a pair of fancy shaped diamonds is not ideal without a picture, but how wrong can things get? Do I really have a chance to open the box and find 2 different looking stones? Is the 2.6% difference in the the tables already enough to say that those diamonds don't match?

I can ask for a gemologist from BN to check to diamonds to see if they match, can I trust his advice?

I was previously hunting for a pair of matched ovals for side stones and found the market to be very bare. I can't speak for BN as I've not purchased from them before but of the ovals "pairs" I found some did not visually match even though the stats said they should. I would be very dubious about buying matching stones unseen, especially as you say you're in Europe so returns/tax/customs becomes an annoyance if you need to return.

I had a good experience with matched fancy side stone at http://www.israel-diamonds.com/search/diamond-pairs/default.aspx?loc=left,, maybe they are worth a look if you haven't checked them already.

Even though numbers can be close you can have totally different looking faceting patterns. So yes, you can open the boxes
and have 2 totally different looking stones.

What is your budget?

Have you looked on JA?

What about these 2?

On JA you can pick an oval then hit the "Similar Diamond" link to see if there might be a matching stone to the one you have
picked. That might be somewhere to start.

Oo never knew about the "similar diamond" button!

I do not know .... many thanks

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for all your help.

I clearly understand that the consensus is to not buy oval diamonds without seeing them but I have decided to move forward with my order. ( I know I am might be making a mistake I got the message, unlike another poster that was recently looking for a cushion on this forum :-) )

I had them checked by a gemologist form BN and he confirmed the following: no bow tie, eyeclean and that there is no visible difference between the diamonds ( matching pair).

The reason why I decided to take the risk is that BN is will offer the returning shipping so if I don't like them I will have no costs.
Buying from a shop here is not on option because it will cost me 3x more!!!!

BN doesn't seem to be the most popular vendor on this forum, but they have a selection of oval by far superior to any other site I have found. So despite I might not have used a robust approach by looking at the numbers only, they were the only ones to offer similar diamonds. Gog has no diamonds between 0.7 and 0.8 ct with the same numbers, I couldn't even find a pair with the same weight!

Some other questions:

It seems that many of you would recommend vendor such as JA, whiteflash or Gog over BN, Is there a reason other than they provide a way to look at the stones?

Do you guys know and have used a vendor that will ship outside the americas with a free return policy and that has a pair of oval earrings with some comparable specs below 5 k?

Tyty333, thanks for your suggestion But how can you know that they look similar? is looking at the picture good enough to assume that? Should I consider that looking at the pictures is more relevant than the green light of the BN gemologist ( in other words would the gemologist BS me to close the sale)?

thank you

From looking at the faceting pattern in the picture. The next step would have been to order aset images to check on the light
return and to see if they had close enough aset images (similar is probably good enough).

No, I do not think the BN gemologist would BS you. Looking similar is somewhat subjective though and what you consider similar
and what they consider similar may differ. I'm not sure how picky (for lack of a better word) you are. In reality they will be
on either side of a head so there wont be too many people evaluating them side-by-side (except you and maybe a few people
close to you.)

Thats a great return policy. Good luck...I'm looking forward to seeing them!
