We are looking for oval engagement rings with a local jeweler.

The jeweler showed us a E S1 2.28 carat stone with a slight feather that was only noticable under a GIA microscope. The table was 57% and the depth was 63.5. The stone looked gorgeous. The price was $16,000. He said his prices are 10% over the price on the Rap Listing (the online listing that jewerlers pay for diamonds).

We were not necessarily looking for E quality, but this stone was with-in our price range and anything bigger (2.5 - 3 carats) would be outside our budget range.

Does this seem reasonable or is it cheaper to work with place like GOG? The advantage obviously is that we can see all the diamonds prior to buying them.

Thanks!

Forgot to mention it is GIA.

Did the Oval speak to you? One of the key things with ovals is the lack of bowtie (unless you prefer them to have one). They come in such a variety of shapes (long and thin, wide and chunky) and it''s personal preference at the end of the day. Unfortunately you can''t judge an oval by numbers alone so seeing it is the best way to tell.

The stone was awesome. It didn''t really have a noticable bowtie for a stone of its size. No fluorescents. Great sparkle/fire.

Before we bought it we mainly just wanted to make sure that we were getting a good deal on a stone that size with those specifications?

It seems to be a good deal judging from the loose stones online, but we have never really bought fine jewerly before so we were looking for some second opinions..

Hi stegosaurus!

It sounds like you might have found your diamond! What I would suggest is to make the sale final on the diamond checking out to your satisfaction in all respects ( and get this in writing) with an independant appraisal. An appraiser will be able to give you a professional opinion on your purchase and answer any questions you might have.

Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

Thanks for the link to appraiser in the area. It would be good to get a second opinion.
