Our Phone Was BUGGED!

So I was sitting the office the other day, when all the phones started ringing. All of them. All lines, every phone, just ringing, and it was loud. I picked up my phone, it stopped for a second then started up again, even though the handset was in my hand.

I went to get DH, and he said it had to be the base unit. So we looked at the (still ringing) base unit, and it looked okay. But then an ant came out. A carpenter ant. DH and I looked at each other and said "Oh, no, not again".

We took the base unit outside and started banging on it. Ants started pouring out. Dozens and dozens of them. Then hundreds, like a black river of bugginess. :o They were everywhere, trying to crawl on us, every freaking where. We calmly found some bug spray (remember, we have been through this before) and sprayed the ones we could reach. DH unscrewed the case, hundreds more ants, we couldn't figure how they all fit in there and the phone had continued to work! About half an hour later, we had cleaned them out and put the phone back together. Plugged it in, worked fine. Outside looked like antmageddon.

Over the years we have found carpenter ants in;
One office fax machine
One home copy machine
One of those 5 gallon water jug dispensers (that was particularly gross)
These were all in different locations in different cities! But all in the south. ::)

So next time an exterminator says you have wood damage because he's seen a carpenter ant, just ask him if he was standing near your copier.

Tried to take pics, but interestingly, you can't see a single ant, they all moved so fast.

OMG EW!

:errrr: :errrr: :errrr:

That is probably my worst nightmare you're describing here. So glad you knew how to take care of it, and did so calmly and methodically. I would probably just run and hide.

Ugh! Nasty! I'm impressed that you stayed calm!!

Gross but so cool!!!!!

Gross!

EEK! That's the stuff of nightmares!

Note to self... if you ever consider a move to the south, be sure to factor in the cost of weekly extermination service!

Yuck! I'm glad your ant problem was solved fairly quickly.

They love the warmth - machines are always nice and warm. Insects are cold-blooded and need external heat to complete life processes like digestion and growth.

Earlier this month we had a small cockroach infestation in our coffeemaker at work - yuck. I'm not a huge fan of chemicals, but thank you pest control guy!

UGH!! OMG!! I so applaud you I would have thrown the phone out. We lost power and my little fridge had food my oldest put in it. I opened it and ewwwww. I went on the curb for trash in the morning and hour later it was gone LOL!!!!

Oh that just turned my stomach. I can't stand ants. I feel for you-- seriously! :((

EW!!!

I have never heard of ants in phones. :o I don't think I'll be calling anyone today.

:errrr: :knockout: :knockout: :knockout: I'd have nightmares for WEEKS I can't stand ants. I live in Aus famed for our creepy crawlies and I've never heard of ants nesting in a phone!

That gives me the shudders! Living in a colder climate means that I'm NOT well-adjusted to having bug problems. Good on you for solving it on your own!

How bizarre!

oh dear... i would have freaked out so bad.... hate bugs... :errrr:

cool - but YUCK!!! Good for you for being so calm about it all. Not me... I'd have freaked!

Did anyone else think this was going to be related to spying from an ex-husband/wife/girlfriend?

I did *NOT* think bugs! I was expecting phone tapping, for sure!

Isn't it, though? I've stopped trying to puzzle out the "why me?" This hasn't happened to any of our friends. Or so they claim . . .

I think it helps that we know carpenter ants don't bite or have venom. They just pinch, which is kinda surprising :o , but doesn't hurt.

EWWWW! Okay, you win, that's horrifying. . . :knockout:

We only have giant cockroaches here, but our cat eats them. Which is also totally gross.

I have lived in the south most of my life but have never heard of such a thing, either! :errrr: Other than the yearly termite spraying under the house, we don't have to do anything else!

Ew! Disgusting!! But glad you found out they were in there... They can cause so much damage. I have no idea why they gravitate to electrical things. I live in a tropical location and we always find ants in our light switches.. it's so bad that a lot of the switches have stopped working already. The ants also like to climb in the base of our electrical kettle... I wonder what they like about it... I know they like sweet things/food...but electricity? Hmmmm....seems strange!

Eeeuuuww, iLander! I think ants are interesting, but that's pretty gross. Where you are in the south, they do have more icky crawlies. I'd be grateful it wasn't roaches. We have the occasional big one in the house, I screech & get goosebumps at seeing them, which scares them as much as it does me. My cat is no help -- he sits on the couch & watches me wrangle them. Thanks a lot!

There's something ant-irresistable about you, obviously. I wonder if they were so attracted, they came with you in your stuff from house to house.

I thought the FBI was after you too, from your subject line!

Really - carpenter ants just pinch?? I had no idea! Hmmm.. PS is so educational! Thanks for that tidbit!

How are things now?
