Our dog Max has Pancreatitis

Our poor guy has pancreatitis from us giving him chicken breast from El Pollo
Loco Wednesday night. Yesterday afternoon I took him out to potty, he had bright red blood in his poop. I immediately called our vet who said to bring him in right away. Three hours later and lots of tests he is positive. We have changed his food, they gave him subcutaneous fluids, pre and probiotics, and a few other things I can’t recall right now.

I am thankful to work from home so I can watch him closely.
Please don’t give your lil dogs any people food.

Was the chicken greasy or did it have too much garlic/onions? It seems like it would be the healthier of fast food chicken choices.

So sorry your dog is feeling blah....are you sure it is from el pollo loco chicken?

Reason I ask is because my dog eats el pollo loco chicken all the time, mostly dark meat and even small bits of skin. He also frequently gets store-bought rotisserie chicken with his dog food, so his system seems to be fine with chicken.

Did your vet tell you what about chicken breast caused this?
Might it have been undercooked, or contained salmonella?

So sorry to hear that. Our oldest boy Alfie had horrible pancreatitis. The vet prescribed a special food which cost a fortune and he hated. I did some research and have been making my own dog food for him for three years. Zero fat, whole fresh foods, he hasn’t had another bout since - and he is a very old boy at 12! I feed him “human” food but without any salt, pepper, fat, spices or anything which might irritate his tummy. He is absolutely thriving. He still gets his treats but just not our leftovers anymore. Hope your furbaby feels better soon.

My Bella (avatar pic) has long term pancreatitis. She take’s PancraPlus twice daily which has helped her greatly. I also feed her Acana Lamb singles.

I boiled chicken in only water for him to add to his new kibble, he likes that. Vet said plain veggies and plain boiled chicken are good for him so we went with that.

My dog had pancreatitis after a dog BBQ party when he was around 2 years old. I guess he had a little bit too much of cooked meat (no seasoning) during the party. He was on prescription dog food since then. Apart from that, he was fairly healthy and lived till 15 years old. Max will be fine. Wish him a speedy recovery.

If you didn't mind sharing, I would love your recipe for homemade dog food. For not very long now I have been feeding mine rice, veggies and chicken. They love it but I'm wondering if I need to add any kind of supplements??

Sure. I really kind of mix it up every batch.

Usually I feed them a mix of brown rice and vegetables boiled with either chicken mince, hearts, gizzards or chopped up breasts, beef mince or strips or pork mince. I avoid lamb as it’s too fatty. The most common veg I throw in is chopped up squash, pumpkin, sweet potato or carrots. I like to add spinach or broccoli too for the iron but cauliflour makes them trump (ha!). Any left over veg that looks like it’s a bit past it’s best gets chucked in too so we have very little wastage.

Sometimes I even give them pasta with beef mince, veg and a tin of chopped tomatoes like a little Italian treat!

I sometimes add canned beans (in water only, no salt or sugar or additives) or lentils for additional protein. I tried barley but it didn’t agree with my older dog.

Sometimes i also give them fish fillets (white fish ir salmon) which is good for their coats. I usually fry fry the fillets and then scramble up a half dozen eggs and add that to their rice with some peas and spinach.

I usually batch cook and what I makes lasts two days (two dogs, fed morning and evening).

For calcium I bake eggshells in the oven and grind them in a coffee grinder and sprinkle a little on their food periodically. I also buy chicken feet which contain glucosamine (great for older dogs with arthritis) and dehydrate them in my air fryer. Or feed them raw.

But their favourite treat is chicken liver, apple and oat squares.

Blend a pack of chicken liver, add an egg or two, mix in one or two grated apples, add a couple of cups of wholemeal flour and a cup or more of oats - I rarely measure accurately just add dry ingredients until it looks like a very moist cookie mix / very thick cake batter. Bake in a shallow tin (like a brownie tin) for 50 mins to an hour at 350 degrees and cut into small squares once cooled. They go nuts for it. Can be kept in the fridge for a week or frozen in batches.

Thank you! I am definitely going to try the chicken liver/egg/apple, etc treats!! I was feeding them white rice and will make the switch to brown.....I don't know why I haven't already done that but I am new to doing this. Since I have started, my German Shepherd Dog has dropped some weight. Even our son noticed it on a visit last week and they love mealtime a lot more!
