Ugh, I''m so mad at myself! I closed the washing machine top and bent down to pick up my 1 year old, didn''t move my left hand fast enough and the top hit my e-ring and hand HARD.

There''s a fairly deep 1/4 inch scratch in the platinum setting; can that be buffed out? I''ve obsessively looked over my diamond and I swear it looks like there is a chip or a scratch but at this point, it might be that my eyes have been staring at my diamond for too long. It almost looks like the ding is inside the diamond? Is that even possible?

Should I take it to a jeweler? Or call my insurance co. and let them know I might have dinged my diamond?

Do you have a loupe? If not, take it to a jeweler and have them look at it for you.

Aw, sorry about your hurt ring.

is possible to ding the diamond, take to your jeweler and they can tell you and yes, the scratch should be able to be polished out.

UPDATE::::

I got a call from the jewelers this morning and they can NOT polish out the scratch in the setting, it''s just too deep

I was told on Saturday that the diamond is fine but asked them today to unmount it so that 1) when I do reset it, the diamond is ready and 2) to make sure there really is no damaged to the diamond since it was viewed mounted on Saturrday. I pick it up tomorrow and we might take it to Martin Fuller for a good once over.

Blah. I''m so down about this!

Aww! So sorry to hear about your ring

So you are getting a new setting now?

I will eventually but right now. I just want the diamond and setting back and then have the stone evaluated again. I''m not even sure what I would reset it in!

I am so sorry to hear about your ering! Is your hand ok? I know you said they can''t buff out the setting, but if it is a plain band, can they grind and re-polish it?

Also, as far as the ding you see in the diamond...it is towards the top or bottom of the diamond. It is possible that if it is below the girdle, you are just seeing the girdle reflection in the diamond. My fiance''s diamond has what looks like a large crack towards the bottom, but when louped, it is obvious that it is just a reflection.

Accidents happen...don''t be too hard on yourself...everything is replaceable. At least (I hope) you weren''t injured...a broken finger or hand would have been worse.

Good luck with everything!

Carrie, this stinks!
Not to be a bad influence, but I know you had been talking about resetting for a while... maybe you can take lemons and make lemonade?

wow that is such a bummer... plat really does seem soft... I have done wicked nasty things to my gold band and there''s not even a scratch. Things much much worse than just having the lid fall on it. I hope they can fill your hole or something!! Glad to know your diamond is okay!!!
