I searched PS but couldn''t find much on the subject...

Is there a preferred orientation of the prongs with the Hearts and Arrows pattern?

I will be going with a 4-prong setting, but I am not sure if the prongs should line-up with the arrows or if the prongs should straddle the arrows. Below is a picture of my two ideas.

Or am I just being to picky???

People usally go north south -east west (like your first pic) or do 11 and 1 oclock and 5 and 7 oclock (like your second pic if rotated). If you girdle is inscribed, that could determine how you go so you don't cover it up with a prong. It really does not matter if you ask me...

I agree, doesn't matter! In normal viewing, you aren't seeing those black arrows anyway!

Its up to you, I know some have a specific preference for how the prongs are aligned with the arrows, you can certainly request they be set a certain way.

I think many jewelers set them like this, where the prongs are inbetween (but in a normal position, it's the arrows that are postioned differently). I personally wouldn't want the arrow tips covered, as that's an area where you get nice big flashes of light. I'll give you the link to the arrow thread, you can observe how those are set.

It’s entirely a matter of taste. Personally, I like to see the octagon of the table lined up squarely to the finger, like in the second picture and like in Ellen’s ring.

Occasionally there''s a desire to cover something, like an inclusion, or avoid covering something, like a girdle inscription, that may help make this decision.

Hi.

Just out of curiosity, what would be the preferred orientation for a 6 prong setting?

Same answer as above

Neil,
Thanks for sharing. BTW, I used to live in C-Springs (USAFA) and spend a lot of time in Denver. If I''m ever in the area, I''ll stop by and say hello.

Cheers.

Ellen,

Thanks for sharing the picture and posting the link. After looking over most of the pics, I am leaning towards option 2 also.

Cheers.
