Re: Orchid enthusiasts, please help with forum recommendatio
Tuckins,
I'd start with proper fertilizer and leave it at that for now. Try to get something more geared for flowering. Your new orchids are fabulous! They are very matured plants with a great root system. I see a variety of types, many needing different type of care and more sunlight. A repot is definitely the first order of business with a support structure to hold the upright. The second step is to ID them so you'll know the ideal condition and care required. Lucky you!

I have 5 various types of Orchid around the house, and I have no idea really what my secret is?
They bloom repeatedly around 3 times each year, with the blooms lasting for several weeks - i have jealous friends! I have them all in clear plastic pots with clear water trays underneath & water from the bottom once a week, filling the tray. I cut the spikes at the base when the flowers drop, except for the 2 Phalaenopsis, which get chopped just above the node closest to where the flowers were. They always re-bloom on the same spike, but usually they will throw out another spike from the cutting point also, and sometimes a new spike from the bottom at the same time, so they can have 3 or 4 flower stems on the go at once.
Mine are all in windows that face East, so they get strong sunshine until around midday. They also all have a radiator below them - not sure if that's good or bad?! I had a Phal that was in the dining room with very little light, and once the first blooms dropped it didn't flower again for THREE YEARS! In a last ditch attempt before putting it in the compost, I moved it to an Easterly window & within about 4 months it threw up a spike. It currently has 4 spikes either in full bloom or budding
I got into them because a friend bought us a large one for a wedding present almost 5 years ago & felt it would be a bad omen to let it die! I have a book called The Orchid Expert by Dr. D. G. Hessayon & it is my bible
But personally I am no expert - just lucky I think
