I am putting the 5.19 ct oval aside for a moment due to all the red flags and considering two other stones. This is one of them (I was hoping to be able to post them together but I probably won't have info on until tomorrow). My concern with this one is the areas along the long sides -- do you think they would look washed out compared to the rest of the stone? (You'll see what I mean more when I get the IS and AST files posted.)

I am having a hard time resizing these images. Hopefully this will be bigger...

Here it is with an E colored princess to show the color contrast.

OK, I have no idea what is up with my pictures sizes today but for some reason I can''t get that one any bigger either. Argh.

Anyway, her is the info from the GIA cert:

Have you seen the diamond in person? Photos of diamonds never show the real color since digital camera, lighting, and your monitor can affect what you see versus what the diamond really looks like in person.

Your question about the sides looking washed out is another example of the difficult of judging a colored diamond based on a photo. Since I take the photos for our company, I can tell you that the lighting can cause the “washed out” look when it is simply glare. Likewise, the dark area tend to be the reflection of the black camera lens on facets that are parallel to the lens. Changing the angle of the camera lens or the lighting can change the dark areas or the “washed out” areas so five photos of the diamond can look very different.

With colored diamonds, the type of mounting you put the stone in will have a big impact on the appearance. For yellow diamonds, you want to have as much yellow gold touching and under the diamond as possible to optimize the appearance of the diamond. That is why most large fancy yellow diamonds are already set in custom mountings. It allows shoppers to see what the diamond will look like when it is properly mounted. Fancy yellow diamond can darken 20-25% in a properly designed mounting.

Denny, thank you very much for the reply. My conundrum in a nutshell is that you are absolutey right about not being able to tell what a stone will look like until it''s mounted, but I would rather buy a loose stone, but when I get it mounted if I don''t like it it''s too late. But.. but... but... I had another thread last week about a mounted stone that I liked the appearance of but there were too many red flags with it, however at least I saw what it would look like in its setting. This is so hard!

DeeJay, do you really love that color? To my eye it doesn''t look like a fancy at all, more like a very warm/yellow non fancy. I think you can do way better...keep looking!

I think (and as Denny pointed out) that the color is probably different IRL than it is on my screen, not to mention it will gain some color from the setting. I have other pics of the diamond and even in those it looks different to me. Have I mentioned yet how hard this is?!?

Have you looked at places where they specialize in yellow diamonds? DBL and there's one other guy who specializes in yellow stones. I didn't think they were that difficult to find but then again I've never looked for them either.

ETA: If you can buy it on spec/approval then you can see what it looks like loose and just pop it into a local setting to see what it will look like. But I wouldn't settle just because it's a difficult search. I'm guessing it aint cheap!

Surfgirl, I have looked at DBL (LOVE David BTW--he has such a wicked sense of humor) and also The Diamond but I decided to open my options up and see what else some of the vendors could find.

What does the vendor think about this one Dee regarding the colour?

Lorelei, he said it is a very nice stone. But of course preference is so individual and subjective...

Could you have it sent to your appraiser so you could check it out if the vendor rates it?

HI:

Colored stone and fancy shape; two variables that would give me pause and dictate seeing the stones IRL!! (for me anyway....too many unknowns....)

cheers--Sharon

DeeJay, Louis Glick! That's who I couldn't remember. Seems he's the go to guy for yellow diamonds. I'm sure it's pricey but they always look nice.
