I am looking for a diamond for an engagement ring. This is going to be put in a cathedral setting and I have decided to go with Blue Nile because I like their selection of settings and wedding bands best. Here are my requirements:

Color: Minimum of G
Clarity: Minimum VS2
Cut: Very Good or Better
Carat Weight: .50-.75
Budget: Aprox $2000

Here are a few I was considering. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. In case anyone asks, she doesn''t want a stone any larger than .75ct.

These aren''t listed in any particular order.

Just on the face characteristics, I would have selected #2 (F VS2) over #1 or #3, G VS1, but, with #2 uniquely having an older style cert not measuring light performance, I''d eliminate it. Between 1 & 3, others may be able to assist.

Does anyone else have an opinion on these diamonds? I am willing to consider suggestions on other diamonds from Blue Nile.

Again thanks for any help.

I would drop #2 because it more out of round than the other two.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?cid=131&item=885714 A little bigger for a little less (1986 with PS discount) would seal the deal for me, but don't know if they have a setting you like. I'd be hard pressed to pick among the light performance stones without more information, though it's not like you could really go wrong, it seems.

I''m not liking #2...it''s out of round. 1 or 3...toss up really. I like Julie''s suggestion from JA. I don''t really have an opinion other than definitely not #2.

I''m not feeling the love for any of these stones.

No, this is a stone with a very good make. No one is going to ever convince me that you can see the difference between good and excellent polish. This stone has very nice proportions.

How do you KNOW? It probably does. Probably.

No one can see the difference between good and excellent polish, but it just means the cutter took time to finish it properly.

0.60 cts, 60.7 depth, 57 table, 34.5 CA, 40.7 PA, AGS 0 for 7 dollars more, and you're not feeling the love?

I was responding to the poster about his choices that I wasn''t feeling the love for. The one you listed looks nice also. I have trouble connecting to the links. I didn''t look at the .60 you listed until later.

The poster said "very good or better" cut.

I''m not a numbers girl in terms of relying on the angles. It''s just another possible indicator. And, a while back cutters were cutting to get those magic angles as the expense of the other aspects of the stone.

Lots of proportions can yield good looking diamonds. And, it can be personal. I love my tiny table deep OEC.

And, it''s the paper saying "excellent polish" not your eyes. None of this should surprise anyone. I''ll never be sold on the nano specs of a diamond. I''ve said this before as an equation - you could have the finest artist, great subject matter, painted at the height of his career & something just not work when the whole picture is put together. I am not doubting that all things could be indicators - but who would have thunk that the Mona Lisa would be as captivating as she is in that tiny picture.

my 2 cents as always.

First I wanted to thank everyone for their opinions on the diamonds I posted. I hadn''t even considered the fact that one of the stones was more out of round than the others.

JulieN,

Should I be concerned about the BlueNile diamond you listed having a cert from November of 05. Does it mean anything that no one has purchased this diamond yet?

It just means that now you have a chance to purchase it

November 05, not to worry. November 02, I would think a little. Oh and Julie''s find is laser inscribed so that''s a nice bonus. Good luck!
