OK I have come out of the closet... after lurking for a while! I put this in the HCA and it came out under 2 - so have I done it correctly??

The diamond in question is
1.4ct, vs1, H, 7.10-7.15 x 4.37mm
table 59%
cr ht 15.5%
pav depth 42%
girdle 4% medium faceted
culet pointed
HRD very good/very good

I am buying in antwerp, the price is around 9500 euro.

Seems that prices in europe are nowhere as good as the US but can any antwerpians tell me if this is a reasonable price? I know the euro has crashed against the USD but will that make much of a diff in price - after all its not just eschange rate but supply/demand right?

Thanks and thanks!

its going to have obstruction issues with the over shallow pavilion.
not very good for a ring.

Thanks for your response Karl

Can you elaborate for me? I''ve seen 3 or 4 diamonds in detail now, I am specifying only excellent cuts and I am confused that some with IGI rated excellent come out at around 5 on the HCA. Its so confusing. I haven''t seen this one in person but I was hoping that it would be good as its got a good score on HCA and very good rating from HRD.

I am afraid I feel quite unsure about selecting one - also as they are unset I am unable to imagine how they will look on a ring

I am going to see this diamond next week and would really like some more opinions on it please please please?

How can it score well in the HCA yest not be a good one? I have read reams and reams of information on this site and forum and it seems to me that despite all the nice calculators, specs data etc its close to impossible to get a consensus of opinion. I am an engineer so I really want to get into the 3rd decimal place but maybe I am asking too much?

is this a round diamond?

Do you have the crown and pavilion angles? The depth %?

Sorry yes this is a round brilliant, but I have no angles. All the info shown on the certificate I included in my first post. I guess I need to see it IRL but I wanted to get a ''technical'' asessment from PSers beforehand. Hope you can help - thanks

Basically stones with a shallower pavilion can score well on the HCA, yet some believe these types of diamonds are not best suited to a ring stone. This is because some diamonds which are considered to be shallow combos may look dark on close scrutiny when worn and observed in a ring. This is due to what is called obstruction and can be caused by head shadow on observation amongst other reasons. Some consider these types of diamonds better suited for pendants and earrings, as the normal viewing conditions don't apply. However whether or not this would be a real problem in this particular stone only you can really tell if you have seen this stone and if so, if it would bother you. Yes you can probably find a diamond which might work better for you as a ring stone. As to this one, the best you can do ( as with any diamond) is to check it out as carefully as you can yourself in person, in as many different lights as possible. And compare with others with pavilions of 40.6 - 41 degrees along with crown angles of 34 - 35 as a rough guide, to see what type of stone appeals to you the most.

Check out this video called Head Obstruction by Garry Holloway to see this effect in action.

The depth percentage is missing from your original post. Without that number, how did you run the stone through the HCA? Perhaps you have it there with you, but neglected to post it?

I took your numbers and did a general search using the "Pricescope your diamond" tool at the top of this page. Here's an image of the results. The prices are all in US dollars of course, but as of this posting the exchange rate is 1.00 USD = 0.782498 EUR. With that rate in mind, your stone would convert as follows: 9,500 EUR = 12,130 USD.

Good luck!

Hi lorelei and girly-girl, thanks for the replies!

Well I am due to go and see this one tomorrow and will check out the obstruction possibility then. The depth % I calculated as 4.37 divided by 7.15 as it was not explicitly given in the certificate. Angles were not shown so I can’t use that data in the HCA.
In terms of price, I notice that the price is much better in the US which is disappointing as so many of those come from Antwerp – but I have accepted this and would like to stick to a budget of less than 10k euro.
I also do notice that the diameter is a little smaller at 7.1-7.15, those shown in the pricescope are up to 7.24 which is a significant difference.

Lilpea,

I had a thought as you say you are in Antwerp, if a diamond of top cut quality is what is important to you, then you could contact Paul Slegers at -

http://www.craftedbyinfinity.com/ They are located in Antwerp and have the most beautiful superideal cut diamonds - if you
contact them they might be able to give you the details of a dealer who stocks these.

Good thought Lorelei. I agree, they have some beautiful diamonds.

The pavilion angle works out to 40 degrees this is guaranteed to have obstruction issues in a ring.
Lorelei is right that most of the time it has to confirmed by viewing it but this one is far enough out it is guaranteed to be an issue.
