I've been lurking here awhile, but now, I really need some input. I was just curious what people think of the following.

A used version of the real Tiffany: (I'm a little hesitant, since there are no papers, but I'm guessing I could get it inspected within the 30 day return period)
http://www.signedpieces.com/item.cfm?item_id=7789

or a slightly smaller stone, which I'd have mounted in the SuperbCert reproduction:

Thanks in advance!

Signed Pieces is very reputable, and a lot of PSers have purchased from them. If you want the Tiffany name, that''s a great way to go. They have a reputation for being wonderful to work for. So don''t be afraid if that''s what you want to do.

By contrast, if you want a SC, that works too. Another reputable dealer.

Yeah, this is tough. I''m not super huge on the Tiffany name or anything, otherwise, I wouldn''t be considering alternatives, but I love a good deal:) The used Tiffany is more the size I want (.76 ct compared to .70), but there aren''t a whole lot of details on the diamond, and I don''t know if .06 carats is worth it. This certificate gives some of the details, but it also says it was remounted from a pendant. Do you think that means a Tiffany pendant? Does Tiffany and Co. even do remounts of other diamonds? Is not having the original paperwork for the diamond bad?

Thanks again!

Anybody else?

I would get a stone from a vendor so that you know what it is that you are buying....To me, tiffany is not a big deal, maybe 60 years ago, but not know....must people look at it for what it is, a company that has done am awesome marketing job.

I don't know very much about this sort of thing, but if you want an opinion...here it goes... First, what is your priority? Is the diamond or setting more important to you? Is a real Tiffany setting important to your girlfriend? Can you see the diamonds in person instead of just seeing specs?

I have seen so many WONDERFUL settings on this site from so many members who bought their rings at various PS vendors - that's why I ask about your girlfriends priorities. I was reading somebody else's post about her being upset that she didn't receive a "real" asscher diamond in her engagement ring (she was unaware that the Royal Asscher existed) and she was set on that particular name brand.

I think once those questions are answered it would be much easier to give you an opinion. There are many factors/preferences/priorities that go into the selection of an engagement ring!

I hope this helped in some way!

Are you willing to go down to an SI1 in clarity (money saver)? I noticed that the set Tiffany was priced at $4950, so here are some rounds from GOG. I don''t know how much their Tiffany solitaire settings are. This is a Tolkowsky cut .75 E/SI1. This one would still leave $1000 for a setting if you are comparing prices to the authentic Tiffany:

Here is a .81 ct. E/SI1 (great color!) from GOG (you don''t have to buy the Mark Morrell setting it is shown in). This is a nice size at 6mm across:

Closer to the price of the SuperbCert diamond is this .82 Tolkowsky cut I/SI1. I just bought an I/SI1 and it looks amazing--good deal too:

Or, if you are set on VS1 clarity, here is a .81 ct. with a G color:

Just a sampling of what GOG has. Hope that helps.

Nice selections NEU!

Thank you! I spend a lot of time on GOG.com which has gotten me into trouble more than once!

I also agree that you should find out whether a Tiffany setting is a must for your girlfriend. I have purchased from SP before and had great service and have read good things about Exel as well. In terms of the actual diamond, though there is a difference in carat weight, there is so much more that impacts the "spread" of a diamond than total carat weight. Of course, Tiffany diamonds are very nice, but you can do better going through some of the vendors on this site to maximize your budget.

Wow, I''ve gotten so much feedback! This is great. I tried to post more last night, but I was getting an error, and now I forget what I was going to say, but I''ll answer some questions and give some more thoughts.

I love this stone!!! http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4513/

It''s funny that you sent it because I''ve been drooling on my keyboard all morning looking at it. After reading great stuff about GOG, I''m leaning towards this stone and having it set into the Tiff replica by Excel. My girl is nothing like the girl from the post about the asscher. She''s the most unselfish person I''ve ever met. That''s the struggle I''m going through. A part of me is afraid that she''s going to rail me for spending too much, and another part doesn''t care because I''m still probably not spending as much as what society would say (like I care!), and I want her to know how much she means to me. I would never buy a new Tiffany because it''s a huge rip, and she wouldn''t even know the difference anyway. She doesn''t really wear jewelry, and this is going to be a complete surprise to everyone around, so I''m picking the setting. I know her well, and she honestly would be happy no matter what I get. The reason I like the Tiffany style is its simplicity. It''s flashy, but in a subtle sort of way. I love it, and I know she will too. Multiple diamonds just wouldn''t fit her personality, and if I''m doing a solitaire, this is it! It''s really just a matter of picking a great stone, and now, I''m leaning towards that one from GOG. So what do I do once I get the stone? Should I have it looked at locally or send it to someone? What''s the best way to ship to another jeweler for a setting? What else am I not asking? Sorry for the novel, but this is crazy exciting!

Thanks!

Though Tiffany settings are beautiful, I think you will get a better value going through vendors you have selected, especially since your girlfriend does not have hear heart set on a Tiffany e-ring. It is also really nice to know you are really thinking of her when selecting her setting (e.g., the type of person she is, what she would like, etc.).

I would talk to GOG and Excel to find out what they prefer, in terms of shipping the stone. I am fairly confident these vendors have worked together in the past, and might be able to easily answer your questions. For instance, I am sure GOG would be happy to send the stone to excel. However, if you prefer the stone coming directly to you, that is also fine b/c then you can find a reliable appraiser to appraise the stone.

Jonathan at GOG can set the diamond for you. Did you look at his Settings link? He also features a number of designers and can get you any of their styles. He also sells classic Tiffany settings from Stuller. Very nice rings.

I wanted to see my diamond before setting, so I had it shipped to me, then set locally. You really don''t need to do this step if using Jonathan. His diamonds are all awesome, and yes, the G/VS1 is a beaut. At 6.03 mm, it faces up almost as large as my 1.05 ct. Jubilee! You could save yourself a lot of trouble by letting him set it. But if you want that diamond, I suggest you reserve it with a $500 deposit before someone else gets it!!!

Well, I just reserved the stone. Whew! What a rush!

Proceed with caution. It''s addicting!

The hilarious part is that I bought this diamond today, and I still didn''t have her ring size or any idea how I would get it. I thought I was going to have to do that goofy shoe thing to try and surprise her knowing it would probably be wrong. Apparently last night, she jammed two of her fingers really bad, and one was her ring finger. So tonight, I kept telling her to put ice on it, and she was saying how she''s fine. I said, I want to see how swollen it is. So I measured both her ring fingers, the left one was the swollen one unfortunately, but I''m now in the ballpark. She has no clue whatsoever either, so I''m just laughing at how both things fell into place on the same day:)

Just an FYI...I am right handed and my right ring finger is bigger than my left ring finger. Is that the case with anyone else?

Some women would be bothered by a second hand ring (ignoring the whole re-cycling of diamonds reality). So... if you've talked to her about it, AND the Tiffany name is something she cares about... I'd probably just go with the Tiffany.

But if you want to be safe? I'f go with NEU's suggestions. She's got some nice ones there.

ETA: Just saw you've already chosen. GREAT choice. I should read threads though before posting. That's a funny story (poor girl, though a jammed finger is painful) about the ring size.

Brilliant! I'm sure you felt bad about her jamming her finger, but boy did that help you! Now that you are in the ballpark, you can get close to her size and have it sized locally if necessary. Are you going with a solitaire setting?

Elegant--Yes, my right hand is about .5-.75 sizes larger than my left hand. And the annoying thing is that it tends to fluctuate in size more than my left hand, especially during hot weather. Which means that I have no problems with my wedding rings year 'round, but my right hand rings tend to be too tight in summer.

I did feel bad about her poor finger, but I''d be lying if I said I wasn''t glad it happened. I can seriously think of no other way to steal her ring size! Anyhow, right now I''m just praying that she''s somewhat symmetrical:) Now I just have to pick out the setting (solitaire, yes) and get it to GOG. Thanks again for all the help/advice.
