My jeweler called me today and said he found a stone he thought I would like within my price range. He has not seen the stone yet, so he does not know how visible the inclusions are, but he said you won''t be able to see them with the naked eye (I don''t know if that is his guess or if he knows that from the vendor he is using). This is all the information he gave me on it:

What can you tell me? All opinions and thoughts are greatly appreciated. I see it tomorrow and have to decide then.

In a stone that size, I'd be surprised if you couldn't see SI2 inclusions from some angle, like maybe from the side. I'd be prepared to examine it very, very carefully and probably take it to an independent appraiser. What kind of cert does it have? GIA?

Unfortunately, I do not have any more information. I do not know the angles or the report. When I was talking to the jeweler and he was telling me about different stones he did say a more expensive one was more because it had a report. I figured he meant a better report than the stone I am going to see tomorrow, but maybe he meant this one doesn''t have one at all. -Is that possible? I thought they all had to be graded in some way. ??
If it does not have a certificate, is that really bad? Can I get one for it later?

No a diamond doesn''t have to be certified. Is it bad? Well, I wouldn''t buy an uncertified stone, personally. As for getting one for it later... yes, it will cost you some money but you can.

You couldn''t just take someone''s word that it''s a great diamond. You could take it to an independent appraiser and then if it turned out to be great, you could always have it sent for a report. But it''s just easier to shop for stones if you know what you''re looking at, and GIA and AGS are the two most reliable certificates to have. I would not make a hasty decision on a 2 ct. stone. Get the rest of the infomation if it does have a certificate and post here again tomorrow.

I agree about an INDEPENDENT appraiser. Not one that''s attached to a jewelry store in anyway. No one should ever rush you on a diamond either. Who says you have only a day to decide? That''s used car salesman talk. A reputable vendor who is proud of their merchandise would have no problem giving you the time to make your decision AND take an uncertified stone to an appraiser. No way I would by a stone without a cert on just the word of a vendor. Even if it was GOG who I trust implicitly I wouuld have the diamond sent to an independant appraiser before completing the purchase.

I agree completely, but thankfully GOG only sells stones that are GIA and AGS!

He did not say that I only had a day, all he said was that the person he was getting it from could not hold it, so I told him to have it sent to him so I can see it. He said it should come tomorrow and I will go and look at it, so I guess he would be ok with me thinking about it for a while.

If it is not certified how does anyone know all of the details? Color, clarity, weight, and demensions? Is the jeweler just saying what he thinks, grading it himself? I am very worried now. I didn''t know you could get a diamond without a certificate so I have a thousand questions running through my head now.

So how does taking it to an appraiser work? Do I have to pay for it in order to leave with it? How long does the appraiser take to appraise it?

I think that usually, they send it to an appraiser, and you pay for the shipping fees back and forth, and the appraisal fees.
Shipping is around $50 (because they have to insure it) - and appraiser fees range in price. The appraiser can do the appraisal on his own, or talk you through it while you''re there.

My engagement ring took about 45 minutes to appraise. He took a bunch of pictures and measurements, and compared it to color samples, etc.

I think GOG do occasionally have uncerted diamonds for sale, known as Excellent Select. Anyone remember the 2.5 M SI2 for the poster who wanted an antiquey looking larger diamond? That was one of those without a cert.

NO CERT on a 2ct stone ? be careful !!! this jeweler is soo full of S**T

that my Brit GF probably can smell it in the UK.

he has not seen the stone yet but...tells you that the stone is eye clean.

I agree with DF Couture, proceed with caution and don't be in a rush to purchase...Also it would be a great help to you to read up on the tutorials to gain a basic understanding of the diamond purchasing process, so you can make an informed one yourself. It seems you are a bit uncertain of how to proceed - that's fine - we were all there once, so if you read the link I will bring up for you, I know it will help you!

Tutorial - start here and then work your way through the topics on the left. I promise you it will be time well spent
