I stumbled into a good deal last week and purchased a very pretty old mine cut diamond. My calipers measure it as slightly larger than 6mm, my estimate is I/J and reasonable SI clarity. My 30x loupe shows several inclusions, but reasonably eyeclean with nice sparkle, symmetry, and medium culet.

Since I didn''t spend much on this, and since it''s not the best stone, I want to stay on a small budget for this project. I''m normally quite the minimalist and my first inclination would be to set it in a narrow bezel on a 16 inch chain. But in homage'' to the vintage nature of this stone what would you think of setting it in this buttercup setting. Instead of hanging it from a bale, I''d prefer to have the setting "float" on the chain.

Will this look dated, or out of proportion, or in any other way odd? What other simple (inexpensive) options might you suggest for this stone. I''ll try to get pictures up later. Thanks for your help!!

I recently had my antique diamond earrings taken out of their buttercup settings and put into a four-prong setting. They''re pretty small (like 3.5mm each) and I am amazed at how much more fire there is now that they''re in the lighter setting. I think the buttecup settings tended to gather dust in the bowl-shaped part behind the diamond and I just couldn''t ever get them as clean as I would have liked, even when my jeweler would run them through her US cleaner.

My boyfriend said that he thought the buttercup settings made it look like I was trying to make small diamonds look bigger, but since your stone is bigger than my studs are, you might not have the same issue.

All that said, I think the setting is a gorgeous one, I love the 50s vintage look and think it''s a lovely idea, especially if you can get the setting to float. My mom is giving me a roughly 1/2 carat round diamond that I suspect is similar to yours (reasonable color/clarity, but nothing I want to spend a fortune on a setting for) - I''m thinking of having it made into a bezel-set pendant that free-floats, so I''m curious to see what you end up doing with yours.

yummy I love the idea but don''t take fashion advice from me 99% of my shirts are black,,, lol

Well I managed to get some reasonable pictures of this, and I''m still up in the air about just sending it back or maybe making this fun little pendant.

Can you find joy in less than perfect diamonds? And if so, don''t they deserve it?

Storm, I''d love to know who you work with, since Rkfd is our old stomping grounds. I''m always an advocate for a good and imaginative benchman. We''ve got friends in the area who''d love to know too.
