I''ve been looking around for a while now and this is what I''m thinking about buying. I''m hoping to get some opinions from you guys because you all seem far more knowledgeable than myself. So, guys, yea or nay?

1.25 ct. E/VVS2 RB
Total Depth: 62.3%
Table: 56%
CA: 34.5 degrees
Pavilion DEPTH: 43
Culet: None
Girdle: Thin to medium
Symmetry: Excellent (GIA)
Polish: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

You need to give us the diameter measurements and pavilion ANGLE.

Unfortunately, my handwriting is terrible and I can''t read the diameter measurements. As for the pavilion angle, it''s 40.7. Is this stone too deep? As far as I know, the CA and PA seem fine.

Deepness depends on who you talk to. Some will say no more than 61, others will say 62 or 63. There is an interesting video on the webiste homepage where some guys compare three stones that are exact in weight, color, GIA cut grade, and clarity, except the pav angles and depths differed slightly on each. 10 people randomly were selected to get there opinions on these three stones. 3 people chose the stone with about 62.7 depth and 41.4 pav angle (deepest stone of the three) 3 chose the second stone, 2 chose the third stone and 2 did not decide. All were GIA ex cut.

If you get a depth between 60-61, you end up with more width and better HCA values, but the overall effect may be non-recognizable.

it''s fine, though GIA would not have 40.7, so did you get that off a Sarin report? nay on the VVS2.

I imagine Julien is saying nay on the VVS2 because you are paying a lot of money for 'clarity'. A VS2 stone would look absolutely identical to the naked eye and perform exactly the same as a VVS2 but cost a lot less.

Of course, some people (noticeably Asians) like high clarity stones and are willing to pay the price for them. E/VVS2 is quite a high standard!

The basic measurements look fine.

As someone pointed out, GIA round to even decimal points so 40.7 may have been a Sarin. If the symmetry is good and the stone is tightly cut, it has the potential to be quite a good quality diamond.

If you can ask the vendor to post an idealscope image or ASET image then we can judge the light return and the performance of the diamond.

Is the stone being purchased from an internet vendor or a virtual diamond database? Or can you actually see it in person.

If you have the money and want to pay for a E/VVS stone - I vote yay for definitely worth having a look at.

*edit* - a crown angle of 34.5 and 40.7 pav angle is fine. 40.8 is perfect and 40.6 is also acceptable (though bordering on the shallower side). However, 0.1 of a degree isn't worth splitting hairs about.

Looks promising, an Idealscope image might settle the question.

All,

Thanks for the input.

Tanalasta - Hah! You got me. I''m Asian. I didn''t know we had that reputation, but if my friends are any indication, it''s true.

As for the cert that I looked at, I saw both the GIA and the Tiffany cert. I pulled the CA number off the Tiffany database. I heard they''re notorious for rounding. Unfortunately, as the stone is from Tiffany, no ideal scope or aset images will be forthcoming.

I saw the stone in person. Looks great to me, but it was under their lighting and my eye is untrained to say the least. I just wanted to confirm with you guys because I did not want to pay such a ridiculous premium for a mediocre stone. The girlfriend has her heart set on a Tiffany ring, though I doubt she could tell the difference w/ a well cut stone from an internet vendor. Oh well. Whatever makes her happy, right?

As you have seen this diamond and it is from Tiffany, it should be a winner. I can imagine your GF will be overjoyed to get her dream Tiffany ring!

Ditto that! Since you obviously can afford the Tiffany pricetag, and the diamond seems to check out well (and fits your stringent colour and clarity specifications), I''d say get it and enjoy her reaction.

Thank you all for the replies!

I know there is similar active thread on this, but I was wondering if you guys thought 1.25 is too small. I''ve read a few posts on here where people voiced a little disappointment regarding the size of their stone and I don''t want this to happen to my gf. She''s generally not a flashy person, but I don''t know if women change their general behavior or wants when it comes to their engagement ring.

Here are the relevant factors I''ve considered:

1. Ring size. She''s a 4 3/4. (And five feet, four inches tall, if that matters).

2. Location. We live in the Bay Area, California. I''ve been in Los Angeles for the past three years, and let me tell you, there are some HUGE rocks down here. Haven''t paid much attention to the culture in Northern California, though. As I recall, it''s a little less showy.

3. Age. We''re both in our mid-twenties. Not many of our friends are engaged or married, so not too much by way of comparison. Obviously, it''ll be inappropriate to judge her ring against someone older and better established.

4. Occupation. She''s an HR analyst. I''m a "professional" (yeah, right). I think she''ll be okay at her work functions and mine as well.

5. My girlfriend. Like I said, she''s never been flashy. Just a jeans/t-shirt kind of gal, not terribly into name brands. But again, does this change when it comes to engagement rings??

What do you guys think? And is there anything else I should be considering? I have a tendency to over think things on a regular basis. As you can see, this ring shopping thing has me in full freak-out mode. Please forgive me

It sounds perfect for her petite hands. I'm sure she will be thrilled with her 1.25 ct from Tiff's

That sounds like a dream ring to me! I would have been over the moon to receive a 1.25 from the local B&M much less from Tiffany''s!!! On size 4 and 3/4 finger that rock will look awesome and HUGE!! Please don''t second-guess this, if she has her heart set on a TIff ring then this one will make it go flitter-flutter!! I guarantee it!

Best of luck and if you get it then we will require lots of pics and hand pics after the proposal.
