I''ve been lurking for awhile. Thanks for all of the info.

What do you guys think about this diamond (specifically depth & table)? On paper it looks great (looks like an AGA 1A, ..right?). Its about $6k on Whiteflash..

From the numbers the stone does look great, but you should have Whiteflash get a Sarin report on it so you can see what the crown height is. Then you should have them give their opinion on how they think the stone looks. If everything seems good, go ahead and order it, and if I were you, I would take it to an appraiser just to make sure it checks out ok. And above all else, the stone should look beautiful to you.

Looks good, I am looking for a radiant, they seem hard to judge by paper.

How important is cown height, and can it be determined without a Sarin report?

smh

Crown height is not on the GIA report, so the machine used to measure crown height is the Sarin. This instrument also measures other things like crown angle and pavilion angle, but I don't think these measurements are so important for radiants. Knowing the crown height is useful though because a crown height of 10% or higher will probably be a better looking diamond. A higher crown height will give the stone more fire.

Thanks for the replies. Does whiteflash have a Sarin report on every diamond? I''ll email them and see what they say.

If this is a diamond that is in their in-house inventory, they probably already have run a Sarin report on it. If they don''t have it in-house, they can call it in and run the Sarin on it.

No need to judge on paper (even the paper of a Sarin report) because WF does great pictures - both in normal lighting and under IdealScope.

The short Sarin report (giving crown height and pavilion depth) puts the stone in a slot on the AGA tables (see under Knowledge/ Fancy Shapes on top of this page). With those grades pocketed, there is still guesswork left about brilliance.

There is a certain sort of Sarin report - a full report that comes as a .srn file that has enough detail to allow the diamond to be 'reconstructed' as a numeric model and all detailed of the cut to be judged that way. But... that is only as good as the measurements and you'd still want to see what the virtual IdealScope image looks like. Better have the real one.

To see what such full Sarin report and the resulting diamond model look like, try This Page. Perhaps the stone is not nearly what you want - this is meant as an example of presentation only.

Hope this helps

All in all, I'd ask for similar info as there is on their 'Expert Selection' stones.
