Hi! This is a GIA certified 1.85 carat oval cut diamond:

What do you think about it? Does anything weird stand out to you? I haven''t gotten the pictures yet but will post as soon as I do.

Weight 1.85

Shape & Cut Oval
Measurements 10.11x6.94x3.73

Proportions
Depth 54
Table 55
Girdle STK-VTK
Culet N

Finish
Polish EX
Symmetry VG

Clarity Grade VS2

Color Grade L

Fluorescence N

54 depth seems very shallow to me and you could be losing some face up size by the stk-vtk girdle. Also, are you OK with an L? Ovals show more color than a round so I just want to throw that out there...

Fancies are very difficult to judge on paper though so seeing this with your own eyes is the most important thing.

Ohhhh, a bit shallow there. You will need to have an opinion from the vendor whether it has a strong bowtie or not...
The color might be pretty hard to hide with an oval, too.

Keep looking.

call whiteflash and tell them your drop dead budget and let them select a great oval with no bowtie

not to be rude but what is your budget?

I''m not sure what all you''ve read as far as the tutorials go, but wanted to pass you this link in case you''ve not run across it yet:

http://diamonds.pricescope.com/fnc3.asp

This chart will give a range of numbers and their corresponding ''cut classes.'' Perhaps it''ll help you narrow down your selection. My apologies if you''ve already read this page. Unfortunately, it''s the only help I can offer.

Good luck!

Oh, not rude at all...
my budget for the diamond is $6200. I need a large stone-- I have gigantic hands and smaller stones look ridiculous. In fact, if I have to go small I will opt to skip a ring all together because it would be a waste of money. Quality doesn''t matter as much to me as long as it looks good.

I''ve been married for 12 years and recently lost my original ring. I would love to replace it with a WOW ring but my budget is limited. I would love to go high end on this but am afraid I will have to go ghetto.

Whiteflash looks fabulous--- it also looks high end to me. With my budget, I am afraid I would have to go small if I went to Whiteflash. I don''t want to waste money on a tiny but high quality ring that will only make my fingers look like swollen sausages. Does that make sense?

Also, here''s a question:

what is the deal about the bowtie? Keep in mind-- I am just a regular joe here-- but whenever I have seen a diamond in a store or on a person, I have never thought, "HOLY COW!!! Did you see the bowtie on that ring?"

Maybe when I see one it doesn''t register with me? Maybe I just notice that something seems "off" about the diamond? I don''t know....

So sorry to hear you've lost your original engagement ring. After 12 years I'm sure you had become very sentimental about it.

With regard to the bow tie effect, perhaps you've seen it and just didn't pay it any attention.

I grabbed these photos from GoodOldGold's website. Here's the link to the page. Hope this helps.

I have to say that it''s been about a month since I lost it and I still can barely talk about it. I''ll try to attach a picture here. The diamond was a GIA and it was inscribed so I keep praying that it will make it''s way back to me. Everyone I talk to tells me that the ring has probably been melted down and the diamonds have been popped out. It''s so sad. I am hoping that I will be able to get a different ring that will help take the edge off of losing it.

For some reason the picture won''t post here. It might be too large.

Anyways, thanks for sending the info about GOG.

I appreciate all of you taking the time to help me figure this out!

I also wanted to ask about something that a couple of you mentioned that this is a shallow cut. What does that mean as far as looks? Also, Deejay mentioned that I might lose some face up size by the stk-vtk girdle. Measurement-wise it appears to be a large ring. If I need to cover more finger, isn''t this what I need to look for?

(I hope my questions don''t drive all of you knowledgable people crazy. I seriously don''t know what I am doing.

I think a too shallow cut might be windowing the stone, letting light go through and resulting in less sparkling stone. Might as well buy a piece of glass if the stone is too badly cut that light just goes through. If you want larger coverage, then shallower stone will do that. Girdle thickness will hide some weight so you will want a middle thickness stone.

Not sure what dimensions are for oval to be considered too shallow cut as the pavilion angles are not constant as that of the round brilliant cut.

I''m not sure about the dimensions, either. Ovals don''t have the standards that RBs do. It seems like most people say just to take a look and them and see if you like it.

It would be hard for me to tell the difference between a bad diamond and a good one. Sad, but true. I''m so thankful for this board and everyone''s advice.

You guys have NO idea how much I appreciate your help!

HI:

I don''t know if there are any rules of thumb--or at least I don''t know any! But I always thought that shallower fancies = greater spread and less bowtie effect. No comment on potenital visual appeal.

cheers--Sharon

I guess that''s what confuses me even more. Maybe I should just go to a local jeweler and they could guide me? My budget is pretty tight which is why I wanted to buy on the internet. I''ve noticed the prices locally are much higher than compared to internet prices but at this point I am so confused when it comes to what is acceptable for an oval and what isn''t.

They are beautiful stones! I think that for my wedding rings, though, I would want a diamond.

My husband would probably like to thank you for giving me the idea for a great right hand ring, though!

i understand (sapphires are second to diamonds for wedding rings)

I think Princess Di had a blue sapphire--- maybe with a halo? Simply gorgeous!

BC''s this diamond is on the shallower side ( although as you know numbers aren''t the be all and end all for selecting these shapes) but an L colour could show some slight tint in this shape....Would you be ok with that?

I went yesterday and looked at some diamonds. I think L may be too dark. It is strange, though. They put an oval that was an N on a ring and it wasn''t an enormous difference... or at least as much as your would think.

Should I go with I and above?

It depends on many things BC how the colour grade can present itself, so no hard and fast rules, also depending on which lab graded that particular diamond and the cut quality among other reasons....I would maybe compromise for now ( and you can always rethink if you need to) start at GIA J colour or better perhaps then work from there.

Thanks for all the advice! I think you are right: J and higher is probably the way to go.
