Hello - new to this site/forum. I''ve read most of the tutorial but I''m still a little fuzzy on the cut aspect. Would some more experienced folks give me their opinion on this diamond . . .

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?b=16&a=12&cid=131&item=868589

Is there other information I need to get to make a final determination? If so, how do I get it? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi - that feather inclusion looks pretty big under 8x magnifying. I would want to know if the inclusion is visible to the naked eye. Most people will tell you that "cut" is the most important of the 4Cs. The cut (not simply the shape, but how the finished diamond is actually crafted) is what dettermines how much brilliance, sparkle and light return you get from your diamond. I notice that the GIA has graded your stone as "very good" (as opposed to "excellent"). If you go to the Holloway Cut Advisor,

https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

you will see that the stone falls outside of the GIA''s or AGS''s "ideal" grade, but still is expected to shine brilliantly with respect to total visual performance.

So if you are ok with the cut (not in "ideal" cut range, but predicted to be very beautiful), your next determination should be the clarity. The feather inclusion I mentioned earlier looks pretty big - I would make sure you can''t see it with the naked eye. Some SI-1s are "eye clean", others are not. Most people will reject a diamond that is not "eye clean". No one wants to stare at a diamond that you can visibly see is flawed. Also, the feather right by the girdle like that may make the diamond more susceptible to chipping, although I defer to the experts on that.

So I would make sure you are comfortable with the cut, and I would make sure the stone is eye-clean. If you are good on both those counts, the stone looks pretty good.

Also, dealers are generally paying around $9,500 for that stone, so the price is competitve.

a very rare example of a firey Ideal Cut - it will have a slightly smaller spread or diameter than some 1.5ct stones - but it will have a lot of percieved size if you set it in a ring because more of the diamond is sticking out the top and less is tucked away behind.

The SI1 inclusion is near the edge and if you are prong setting it ask that a prong be placed there. No one with even the sharpest eye sight will ever see it once set.
